The Trade and Regional Integration Unit (ETIRI) is part of the Prosperity Vice-Presidency. In ETIRI, we are responsible for delivering analytic, advisory, financial and convening services in the areas of trade policy, trade facilitation, logistics and connectivity, and regional integration.
ETIRI is hiring a Senior Trade Economist to contribute to analytical and technical assistance engagements as well as contribute to World Bank lending operations on trade in services policy issues in low- and middle-income countries across different regions. The focus will be on assessing the impact of services regulations on trade and on advising developing countries on ways to leverage trade in services (including digital trade) for development impact.
Duties and Accountabilities: The successful candidate will work to broaden and deepen the World Bank Group’s trade program including, but not limited to:
- Lead and/or contribute to analytical studies on trade in services and digital trade policy trends and their impact on development.
- Lead and/or participate in the development of new knowledge products and instruments that can be mainstreamed into country work, including the development of toolkits for analytical work, and the design of country wide policies.
- Support the regions by participating in the policy dialogue on trade in services and digital trade with client countries and in lending projects initiated by country teams.
- Lead and/or participate in the corporate review of internal WBG products when concerned with trade in services and digital trade dimensions.
- Prepare briefs on trade in services and digital trade matters for Senior WBG management.
- Lead and/or participate in knowledge sharing, learning activities and the internal and external communication of the Global Trade and Regional Integration Unit, and organize and contribute to dissemination activities, conferences, workshops and learning programs.
- Participate in and expand the scope of partnerships established with other units and organizations active in the area of trade in services and digital trade dimensions.
Selection Criteria:
- Master’s or Advanced Degree in economics, with at least 8 years of relevant professional experience on trade in services and digital trade issues (or PhD degree in relevant field, and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience).
- Strong analytical skills, and proven track record to conduct independent policy-relevant research, translate theory into practical applications, and adapt professional knowledge and technical skills to analyze, diagnose and propose solutions to trade policy issues.
- Strong command of general and partial equilibrium modelling, and key data sets used in trade in services/digital trade quantitative analytical work.
- Excellent knowledge of institutions and rules regulating international trade.
- Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of the concepts, principles and practices which govern trade diagnostics and tools, and regional integration policies.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with multiple priorities and tight deadlines. Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Demonstrated ability to take leadership and communicate ideas effectively under pressure.
- Prior professional exposure to trade in services and digital trade policy issues in low and middle-income countries highly desirable.
