HJF is seeking an Epidemiologist II to conduct epidemiological research and provide epidemiological and biostatistical support for the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP) of the Department of Surgery, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.
The Military Epidemiology and Population Sciences program of MCCRP conducts cancer-related research projects that benefit the Department of Defense (DoD) and DoD beneficiaries and fill important scientific gaps, using the unique and precious DoD resources. The main focus is epidemiological and health services research using the DoD cancer registry and medical claims data, which covers various topics in cancer incidence, detection, diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, and survival.
The Murtha Cancer Center is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.
Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.
Responsibilities
- Initiates, designs, and implements epidemiological studies under supervision of a more senior epidemiologist.
- Performs literature review, identifies gaps and topics in cancer research, participates in studies important for DoD and scientific advancement, and writes scientific reports/papers.
- Assists in the development of research resources, progress reports, internal guidelines, and protocols.
- Collaborates with other researchers and participates in collaborative research.
- Provides consultation and support in study design and statistical analysis, including advising on designing studies, analyzing statistics, and epidemiological interpretations of the research.
- Conducts portfolio management including proposal review and project evaluation.
- Involves teaching students/graduate students as needed.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Master's Degree in epidemiology or related scientific discipline required. Doctoral degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience in cancer research required.
- Advanced knowledge and ability to use epidemiological methods in human research.
- Advanced knowledge in statistical methods and analysis including multi-variable analysis.
- Knowledge of statistical software including SAS, SPSS, and other relevant software packages.
- Experience working with large health data sets required.
- Good written and oral communication skills with publications on cancer research.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 public trust investigation.
Physical Capabilities
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
Compensation
- The annual salary range for this position is $73,000 - $100,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
