The George Washington University Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) Division seeks an Assistant Vice President, Annual Giving. DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients, and friends. Our goal is to advance GW's mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.
The GW Office of Annual Giving meets the university's needs by raising funds that have an immediate impact. With a focus on increasing alumni participation rates, the team employs direct marketing best practices, innovative digital and personal outreach strategies, and front-line fundraising efforts to build a base of support for the university. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, the Assistant Vice President will be responsible for the successful implementation of the annual giving program and serves as the head of the annual giving operations.
The Assistant Vice President of Annual Giving will:
- Lead Strategic Planning for Annual Giving: Oversee the development, forecasting, and execution of short- and long-term strategies to achieve the university's annual giving goals, with a focus on growing unrestricted support and financial aid.
- Oversee Annual Giving Operations: Manage all aspects of annual giving, including direct marketing, leadership giving, and stewardship initiatives, ensuring coordination across programs and consistent performance against defined goals.
- Build and Manage a Comprehensive Donor Pipeline: Establish a streamlined process for moving donors through the pipeline from broad-based annual giving, leadership giving, and passing leads seamlessly to the major gifts team for further engagement.
- Supervise and Mentor a Team of Fundraising Professionals: Lead, guide, and provide ongoing mentorship to a team of direct and indirect reports, ensuring their success in executing targeted solicitation, stewardship, and engagement strategies.
- Donor Portfolio Management: Manage a personal portfolio of leadership and major gift prospects, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, with a focus on securing gifts of $50,000 or more.
- Innovate and Adapt Annual Giving Tactics: Continuously develop and implement innovative strategies and methodologies to identify, engage, and cultivate new donors, leveraging data, industry trends, and emerging technologies.
- Oversee Donor Stewardship Programs: Lead the stewardship efforts for all annual giving donors, with a focus on the GW Loyal Society and Luther Rice Society benefits, ensuring meaningful donor recognition and engagement.
- Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with university leadership, donor relations, constituent engagement, family philanthropy, and other teams to align messaging, goals, and fundraising efforts across departments.
- Analyze and Report on Fundraising Performance: Consistently track, analyze, and report on key performance indicators, including ROI, donor retention, and revenue generation, delivering insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Develop a Culture of Lifelong Philanthropy: Lead initiatives to promote a culture of philanthropy among alumni, students, parents, and friends of the university, ensuring that annual giving is aligned with larger university engagement goals.
- Implement Industry Best Practices and Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations governing philanthropy, while remaining at the forefront of industry trends, best practices, and innovations in fundraising.
- Execute and Lead University-wide Giving Campaigns: Oversee signature giving campaigns, such as GW Giving Day, ensuring alignment with broader university priorities and maximizing participation across diverse donor segments.
- Contribute to Strategic Campaign Development: Play a central role in the planning and execution of major university fundraising campaigns, collaborating with colleagues in Development and Alumni Relations as well as campus leaders.
- Foster Key Partnerships Across Campus: Build successful partnerships with key stakeholders across campus, including Financial Aid, Admissions, Human Resources, and other academic and administrative departments, ensuring fundraising goals align with institutional priorities.
- Represent the University as a Thought Leader: Serve as an industry thought leader and advocate for the university's philanthropic vision at national conferences, while continuously enhancing your professional knowledge and leadership profile.
This is the top annual giving position at the university. This position oversees the strategy and execution of university-wide annual giving program, while providing leadership to the annual giving team, including indirect reports in the schools and center. This position focuses enhancing philanthropic engagement across the constituencies by increasing giving participation and fostering the growth of donor pipelines, particularly through digital and web streams. This role is encouraged to engage best practices as part of the overall program and must evaluate results of all aspects of it as it relates to ROI. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 9 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 7 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
