Walgreens is looking for a Principal Managing Architect to join the WBA Digital Team. This role supports both the local Walgreens business as well as the global Walgreens Boots Alliance organization. This team is leveraging the most advanced and exciting technologies to service the 13,100 plus pharmacy-led, health and wellbeing retail stores Worldwide. As a Director, you will lead other Architects and set technical strategy for WBA. In addition, other activities would be to facilitate and lead a team in the design, development, integration and deployment of various technologies in support of WBA’s efforts.
The position requires the individual to join an agile team setting working on customer-facing solutions for a Fortune 50 organization. As such, you must be a self-starter, a quick learner, and have the ability to innovate and communicate proactively across the organization. The role promotes working with a team and others around the enterprise on mutually beneficial solutions while challenging any complacency or lack of ownership. The candidates should be able to encourage others, continuously learn themselves, apply modern technical approaches and set a high standard for delivery of solutions. The role is strategic and requires applying independent judgment, encourages innovation and promotes a generalist mindset.
Job Responsibilities
- Develops and executes on IT product/service strategies and plans.
- Directs the operations of the assigned functional area to achieve strategic and operational business goals and targeted financial and content quality results.
- Establishes operational objectives for managers and/or teams of professionals in order to achieve the strategic and operational objectives of the group.
- Responsible for executing on functional and business goals for the specified area of expertise.
- Proactively addresses problems across functional areas of the business.
- Leads the creation of or creates design documents that ensure consistency in development across the IT organization.
- Leads the definition of software architecture to ensure that the IT organization's software solutions are built within a consistent framework.
- Leads the decision-making processes related to the selection of IT architecture solutions.
- Leads teams and architects on timely and accurate delivery of new features or technical improvements.
- Develops the technical strategy and vision on assigned projects with internal and external stakeholders.
- Implements and improves core software infrastructure.
- Participates in improving software development lifecycle, technical operations and technology innovation.
- Develops technical/business approaches and new or enhanced technical tools.
- Shares highly-complex information related to areas of expertise and/or to gain acceptance of new or enhanced technology/business solutions.
- Anticipates and prevents problems and roadblocks before they occur.
- Serves as a technical and business-savvy resource to software engineering personnel on a wide range of software design issues.
- Mentors less experienced members of the team.
- Leads teams/projects and implementations.
- Provides subject matter expertise to less experienced team members.
- Maintains organization reputation while potentially representing IT Technology in internal or external forums.

External Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and at least 8 years of experience in an IT engineering role OR High School / GED and at least 11 years of experience in an IT engineering role.
- At least 6 years of experience developing and implementing Architecture.
- Experience in domain-specific architecture concepts and emerging technologies.
- Experience creating and promoting guiding development principles and influencing development teams, business users and management in the adoption of technical solutions.
- Experience in at least one of the following Cloud providers: Azure, GCP, AWS.
- Experience with Microservices and Event-based architecture.
- At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
- At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
- Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Information technology, Engineering, Science, or Math.
- At least 5 years of experience in domain-specific Architecture.
- Experience with enterprise integration and data processing approaches, such as Kafka, Event Hub, or ETL tooling.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience designing and implementing APIs.
- Experience working with matrix teams including teams in different time zones.
