We are recruiting for a Head of US Patient Access to serve as the functional lead for patient access performance in the United States. The Head of US Patient Access will be responsible for informing and validating US Market Access Strategies for priority programs across Abbott's Cardiovascular and Neuromodulation portfolios. This leader will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining key stakeholder relationships within government, industry associations, and professional societies, to inform portfolio strategies and support US access execution. They will also have accountability for bridging the gap between launch and market access optimization with a robust patient prior authorization support strategy executed via a fully staffed patient therapy access team.
This position will lead a strong patient therapy access team and leverage central resources to develop, expand and integrate prior authorization support into Abbott’s robust pipeline of innovations. This role is responsible for working with peers across our Health Economics and Reimbursement (HE&R) capabilities to deliver business-critical insights about the impact of payer policies on patient access and opportunities to improve patient access through cross-functional strategies including education and evidence generation activities.
The PTA lead will serve as the single point of contact for prior authorization policy insights and implications to Abbott Medical Device portfolio strategy and may be required to design and execute related education and advocacy efforts.
This leadership role will report directly to the Divisional Vice President of Health Economics and Reimbursement and will carry additional responsibilities as a member of the HE&R Leadership Team. Such responsibilities may include spearheading cross-functional strategic planning and growth initiatives, improving organizational access literacy, or driving functional customer centricity programs.
This is an on-site role. Talent will be required to co-locate with peers at an Abbott office.
WHAT YOU’LL DO –
Serve as the subject matter expert for payment pathways, policies, and regulatory requirements that govern processes such as prior authorization in the United States.
Work with US business leaders, and peers across our Market Access capabilities, to deliver business-critical insights, externally informed US patient access opportunities, and cross-functional strategies to unlock/improve patient access to life-changing technologies.
Build account-level relationships, in collaboration with business unit partners, to help Abbott identify and navigate patient access challenges.
Co-create integrated US Market Access strategies alongside global therapy area leaders.
Lead a strong patient therapy access team, by setting the direction of the capability and mentoring the team to be business integrated and customer engaged.
Benchmark capabilities and stay abreast of prior authorization policy trends to inform internal capability development and long-term product strategy.
Merge PTA data with business and US market insights to enhance integrated product access strategies.
Elevate organizational awareness of the role of PTA in product access strategies by building strong working relationships with Business Unit Presidents and Cross-Functional Divisional VPs to improve access literacy across Abbott Med Device.
Partner with Legal and Compliance colleagues to set goals and develop continuous improvement objectives to ensure systems and processes are compliant, efficient, and effective.
Own the development and execution of the Abbott Health Economics and Reimbursement teams internal training and education program.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING
Required:
Demonstrated knowledge of US and global healthcare payer systems, including expertise in health care financing, reimbursement policies related to the device industry, and technology assessment.
Ability to lead and motivate a team of professionals, including managers and staff, to achieve performance goals and maintain high morale.
Demonstrated ability to execute in a matrixed environment by influencing without authority and driving alignment through shared goals.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with internal teams, external stakeholders, and senior leadership.
Strong analytical abilities to interpret data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to improve performance, optimize resources, and address challenges effectively.
Proficiency in leading organizational change initiatives, including process improvements, technology implementations, and workflow optimizations, while managing resistance and ensuring successful adoption.
Track record for developing and improving upon enterprise systems and processes.
Familiarity with the prior authorization process for medical technologies.
Preferred:
Experience working with CMS in leverage programs such as NTAP and TPT to bring new technologies into the US market.
Experience working on Prior Authorization solutions including patient intake, prior authorization, and clinical documentation.
Knowledgeable about product development and commercialization processes.
Ability to interpret and integrate business strategies into actionable, value-added Market Access initiatives.
Medical device experience in the cardiovascular area.
Passion for elevating adjacent capabilities by positioning access principles as strategic enablers.
