The Atlantic Council GeoTech Center is seeking an exceptional and driven individual, well-versed in project management and research, to oversee the delivery of an expanding portfolio of global technology policy initiatives. As the Assistant Director, the candidate will assume a pivotal position in steering, crafting, and coordinating the Center's efforts, which encompass a mix of virtual and physical policy workshops, events, analytical briefs, special studies, and exclusive, high-caliber meetings.
Candidates must possess a deep understanding of the impact and societal relevance of emerging technologies, coupled with a robust history in project oversight, and event and program coordination. Essential skills include outstanding organizational and communication capabilities, exceptional writing proficiency, and a keen grasp of policy and regulatory matters. The ideal applicant will exhibit an entrepreneurial mindset, articulate ideas clearly, thrive under pressure, and adapt quickly to a dynamic and expanding environment. Creativity, initiative, and a documented history of successfully supporting research and editorial endeavors are crucial, alongside experience supporting in-person and virtual engagements with policymakers, industry leaders, and subject matter experts. Experience in copy editing, public speaking, and research-driven and creative program ideation on pertinent topics is also highly valued.
This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters on a hybrid schedule (4 days per week in office). The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from $55,000 to $63,000.
Job responsibilities:
- Project Management and Strategic Planning: Assist in the coordination and oversight of key projects related to the Center’s core pillars around Critical and Emerging Technologies including Artificial Intelligence and leveraging space technology for positive global outcomes including climate mitigation, ensuring timely execution and alignment with strategic objectives. Work closely with senior management to plan and implement project activities effectively.
- Event Coordination and Engagement: Lead the organization and execution of GeoTech events, managing both in-person and virtual formats. Collaborate with the Council’s Engagement team to ensure successful event outcomes and maintain robust engagement with stakeholders.
- Administrative Leadership and Support: Provide essential administrative support to the Center's leadership, usually around a core administrative area such as editorial, marketing/media, fellows, scheduling, knowledge management, hiring/staff management, grant fulfillment or other critical administrative functions. Ensure smooth operations and efficient management of resources.
- Project and Stakeholder Management: Oversee a diverse portfolio of ongoing projects from proposal, execution to impact analysis, encompassing communications, fundraising, partner relations, events, and research. Engage with stakeholders, maintaining strong relationships and ensuring responsiveness to their needs and requests.
- Subject Matter Expertise (SME) and Global Influence: Serve as a key resource on artificial intelligence (AI) related topics, providing insightful analysis and contributions to global conversations. Deepen knowledge of subject matter to ultimately leverage expertise to influence policy decisions, support in the formulation of strategic planning and program creation, and enhance the Center's reputation as a SME and leader in AI research and policy advocacy.
- Internal and External Representation: Act as a representative of the GeoTech Center within the organization, particularly among Associate and Assistant Directors and their professional peers, and at external events, enhancing the Center’s visibility and impact.
- Expert Network Liaison: Support engagements with the Center’s network of senior fellows and external experts. Help manage their contributions to the Center’s initiatives, including research publications, panel discussions, and other engagement activities.
- Research and Analysis: Support and conduct in-depth research and analysis on emerging trends and policy developments both in the U.S. and internationally. Publish findings and insights to inform the Center’s strategies and the wider policy discourse.
- Documentation and Reporting: Take detailed notes during events and meetings for internal and external distribution, ensuring accurate documentation and dissemination of key information and discussions.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of three years of direct professional experience or in a related field, demonstrating a track record of success and depth of knowledge.
- Preferred advanced degree in International Affairs, Geopolitics, Technology or Data Sciences, or an equivalent blend of education and hands-on experience in related disciplines.
- Proven ability to lead projects and events from conception through to execution, offering comprehensive logistical and administrative support.
- Demonstrates a proactive approach, with the ability to anticipate challenges and quickly devise effective solutions. Forward-thinking and committed to innovation and excellence, thriving in dynamic and collaborative environments.
- Exceptional organizational acumen and project management capabilities, complemented by outstanding communication and writing skills. Demonstrated proficiency in administrative tasks, ensuring smooth operations and effective coordination.
- An entrepreneurial spirit underpinned by a robust work ethic and exemplary interpersonal abilities. Capable of fostering positive relationships and facilitating effective communication across various organizational levels. Proficient in building a cohesive team environment, engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders from interns to C-suite executives and high-level officials.
- In-depth understanding of the critical issues and key figures in the fields of data, technology, and policy, spanning government, private sector, academia, and non-profit organizations. A strong preference for candidates with this knowledge.
- Versatility in community management and engagement with thought leaders and VIPs, alongside skills in multi-media production, social media strategy, marketing, journalism, copy-editing, grant writing, and database management.
- Excellent command of the English language, with superior writing and editing skills.
- Proficiency in foreign languages will be considered an added advantage.
