Overview of the Role
The Deputy Director will assist the Vice President and Senior Director of the Scowcroft Center in managing the Center. The Deputy Director will ensure that the Center runs smoothly by facilitating strong communication and cross-Center collaboration among the initiatives. The Deputy will play a representational role for the center, filling in for the Senior Director when not available, including by providing remarks at events, meeting with officials, and engaging donors. The Deputy will serve as main point of contact to the rest of the organization. The Deputy will work with other Programs and Centers—including supporting teams such as Finance, Development, Communications, and more—to ensure the business needs of the Scowcroft Center are met. The Deputy will manage the Center’s external communications (including social media channels, webpage, weekly newsletter, etc.). The Deputy will assist the Senior Director in thought leadership and will contribute substantively to the Center’s work.
The role is based in our Washington, DC headquarters on a hybrid schedule (4 days per week in office). The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from $110,000-$140,000.
Job Responsibilities:
- With the Senior Director and other members of the management team, oversee the Center and ensure its operations run smoothly to achieve its mission.
- Play a representational role with internal and external stakeholders, including by providing remarks at or moderating events, meeting with donors, and briefing officials.
- Serve as a bridge between SCSS staff and leadership/management, including communicating on the staff’s behalf to management. In close collaboration with colleagues, execute the vision and priorities of the management team.
- Act as main point of contact for SCSS to the rest of the Atlantic Council, including other Centers and Programs as well as supporting services. Representing SCSS and maintaining a superb Center-wide reputation for efficiency, effectiveness, and collegiality.
- Help organize and run staff meetings.
- Ensure the weekly SCSS newsletter goes out in a timely and high-quality manner to subscribers and stakeholders.
- Provide oversight of communications channels and platforms, including social media accounts, website, and more.
- Support the biannual Scowcroft Center Advisory Council meetings, including working with colleagues on the Scowcroft Management team to coordinate logistics.
- Manage the Scowcroft Center’s relationship with key funders, including coordinating with relevant programs and centers to develop fundraising materials, organizing meetings with visiting officials, and ensuring deliverables are completed in a timely manner.
- Assist in managing and incubating initiatives and centers.
- Work directly with the Finance team to help with financial deadlines, manage the Center’s billing codes, and more.
- Partner with the Development team to help communicate and track opportunities and projects across the Center.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field strongly preferred.
- Preferably at least 7-10 years of relevant experience in a matrixed organization.
- Skilled in clear, persuasive, and effective communications with various stakeholders including excellent written skills, and some experience presenting to high-level audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence.
- Demonstrated experience managing teams.
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational inclination.
- Experienced in MS Office, and in digital communications for engagement.
- Project or program budget management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently on multi-step, detail-oriented projects in a fluid environment.
