CapSpecialty is seeking a Head of Surety Underwriting who will oversee all underwriting activity and standards, manage reinsurance relationships, and provide ongoing training across the organization.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Help the field underwriters produce good business, including meeting with key brokers and customers.
- Oversee all underwriting activity across all commercial and small construction programs. Establish and maintain underwriting standards, guidelines and rate adequacy.
- Chair the Credit Committee.
- Manage reinsurance relationships including treaty programs and special acceptances.
- Provide individualized training and group training on an ongoing basis.
- Work with Claims and Legal on manuscript indemnity requests and contract reviews.
- Keep abreast of developments in the surety industry through participation in NASBP, NAIS and SFAA.
- Contribute to a team effort as part of the management team.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct supervision of a Senior Underwriting Manager. Indirect supervision of all surety field underwriting operations.
Core Competencies:
- Strong financial analytical skills.
- Deep surety knowledge across bond forms, statutes, contract language and other surety related legal concepts.
- Strong training and mentoring skills.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance or equivalent.
- At least 10 years of management and underwriting experience in the Surety industry.
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- May be required to lift up to 10 lbs. at times.
- Some travel required (up to 25%).
