Job Description / Primary Objective
We are currently hiring for one (1) full-time unlimited and one (1) full-time limited Structural Plans Review Engineer for the Commercial Architectural/Structural Plan Review team, and one (1) full-time unlimited Structural Plan Review Engineer for the Residential Plans Review team. The full-time limited position has an anticipated end date of 12/31/2026 with the potential to be extended or to become an unlimited position.

BUILDING COMMUNITY: Denver Community Planning and Development is responsible for visionary city planning and ensuring safe, responsible, sustainable building. CPD regulates planning, zoning, development, and maintenance of private property in Denver.
The City and County of Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is seeking a highly motivated Structural Plans Review Engineer (PRE) to join our Development Services Division. The Plans Review Engineer is primarily focused on structural review of basic to highly complex level professional structural engineering work; and additionally, learning and reviewing the architectural aspects of a building by administering and monitoring a diversity of residential and commercial projects involving the new construction of and/or renovation of buildings and facilities and reviews design and construction documents for adherence to regulatory compliance (IBC, etc.).
Schedule: Training period (first month) will be all in office. After training, schedule is hybrid: 2-3 days in the office per week. Flexible on start/end times.
This crucial role will have an impact throughout Denver by reviewing and evaluating construction documents to ensure compliance with Building Codes and structural engineering standards for various buildings and structures throughout the City and County of Denver.
Key responsibilities will include:
• Review and evaluate architectural and structural construction documents submitted for approval utilizing applicable codes, standards, guidelines, laws, appropriate municipal ordinances, and construction and engineering standards, determine review fees, and authorize the release of approved documents for city permits and construction.
• Check engineering calculations and provide timely oral and/or written communication detailing design and/or construction deficiencies in plans and specifications.
• Interact with the public, professional design consultants, project managers, contractors, and elected officials to communicate permit application procedures and regulatory and code requirements and interpretations.
• Participate in design coordination meetings regarding private development projects and city, state, and regional capital improvement projects to guide the development process, ensure timely approval and completion of projects, and resolve any problem areas.
• Assist inspectors with interpretation of difficult or unusual code compliance issues and answer questions from inspectors about plan review comments.
• Participate in recommending and establishing policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and specifications and evaluate the effectiveness of existing methods, policies, procedures, and propose local and national model code modifications; perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements (Education, Level of Experience, etc.)
Our ideal candidate will have some or all of the following skills and experience:
• A minimum of five years of direct design experience with a wide variety of buildings (both residential and commercial), structural materials (steel, concrete, light gauge metal, wood, masonry), and lateral force resisting systems (moment frame, shear wall, braced frame, cantilever column, flexible, rigid, and semi-rigid diaphragms).
• Experience using Bluebeam Revu preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively – verbally and in writing.
• Efficiently demonstrates excellent time/work management skills.
• Works well under pressure and able to multitask.
• Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
• Ability to understand, interpret, and enforce the intent of the codes.
• Possess International Code Council Building Plans Examiner Certification (or receive within first 6 months) preferred.

• Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field as required by the specific opening.
• Experience: Three (3) years of professional engineering experience after obtaining a Professional Engineering (PE) license OR three (3) years of professional architecture experience after obtaining an Architect license. (Some positions may require experience in a specific engineering area).
• Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
• Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
• License/Certifications: Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application. Or requires registration as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration at the time of application. Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.
