We are hiring a Director of Therapeutic Recreation to join our dynamic team at Summit Commons Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Providence!
Summit Commons is a 130-bed skilled nursing facility. This role reports directly to the administrator and is a department head.

As the Director of Therapeutic Recreation, you will plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operations of the recreation department.
Experience & Education:
- Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- One (1) year experience or training in directing group activities required.
- Must meet one of the following criteria: (a) eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990; (b) has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a therapeutic activities program; (c) is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; or (d) has completed a training course approved by the State.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assists in plans and provisions of patient care by visiting residents regularly to evaluate needs.
- Oversee staffing for the department including recruitment efforts.
- Document and report to the nursing department any unusual or significant findings.
- Encourage residents to take part in activities of daily living that will stimulate their potential physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.
- Spend duty time with residents rather than with other facility staff.
- Assist with and follow through on the establishment of resident care goals within the framework of the entire therapeutic team.
Specific Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
- Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional personnel.
- Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.
- Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing policies and procedures.
- Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
- Must participate in continuing education and in-service training.
