Fincantieri Marinette Marine, a Fincantieri Marine Group Company, is a progressive shipyard specializing in building ships for the United States Navy. We currently have an opportunity for a Ship Design Technical Lead at our Washington, DC location.
Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) is establishing a Naval Design team as part of the continuing development of our engineering department. The focus of this group will be ship concept design, new program development, feasibility studies, class design services, technical specifications, proposal development, and research and development. This team will supplement our current engineering staff located in Marinette, Wisconsin, and work closely with our existing program offices, business development team, and estimating group.
Split between ship design and ship's payload, FMM anticipates this new team to be at the forefront of our technical and design efforts. Its proximity to our customers and leading naval technical leaders will help us to anticipate market needs and provide accelerated support. Additionally, it will take the lead in building and maintaining our relationships with universities, research laboratories, and industry partners.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Ship Design Technical Lead will lead the ship design portion of the Naval Design group, which will be made of a number of ship design specialists able to define:
- Ship Platform able to support the payload as defined by the advanced naval systems team/customer.
- Develop a ship design and relevant technical specifications, weight estimations, etc. to enable arrival to a customer proposal and a detailed cost estimation.
- Support customer-driven concept variations specific to existing designs to evaluate feasibility for eventual elevation for further (functional/detail) design development.
- Class design service development, management, and coordination between internal and external engineering and design centers, including universities and research partners to support the US Navy FFG program.
- Develop and study new concepts in ship design and technologies in collaboration with universities and research partners.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties to include, but not limited to:
- Responsible for developing and managing a group of engineers and designers to support the efforts of the Naval Design group.
- Build relationships and coordinate with research partners, including universities and labs.
- Identify and lead efforts to attain externally funded research in the area of marine technologies.
- Proposal development for ship designs, R&D, etc., in support of business development efforts and customer requests.
- Requires frequent travel to support the shipyard teams, research partners such as labs and universities.
- Work closely with the Advanced Naval Systems Technical Leader/Team (responsible for the payload of the ship), as well as the core engineering teams at FMM, ACE, FBS.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. When entering the shipyard, the work environment is not climate-controlled and there is exposure to moving equipment.

PAY RANGE: $103,958.40 - $161,109.00
This range represents the overall market pay rate for candidates who meet the necessary qualifications and experience requirements for this role. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as experience, education, and performance.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EXPERIENCE:
- 12 to 15 years minimum in the shipbuilding industry.
- Direct ship repair and design experience is advantageous.
- Research & Development experience in reputed Labs or research centers.
EDUCATION:
- Master's Degree in Engineering, Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering and 8 years of experience of increasing responsibility in the engineering field of competence.
SKILLS:
- Past experience successfully leading engineering teams.
- Experience with concept and functional ship design.
- Experience in a research and development environment.
- Must have a working knowledge of standard shipbuilding rules and regulations, as well as the associated regulatory agencies and the review & approval process.
- Must have current computer skills relevant to the field of competence.
- Must have ability to work within schedule and budget restraints.
- Ability to approach challenging problems with creative solutions.
- Must have the ability to maintain a professional demeanor.
- Must have effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have ability to maintain confidentiality.
- A basic Earned Value Management System competency is desirable.
- Must be able to obtain and hold level of Secret Clearance or able to meet the requirements to gain a Secret Clearance.
