Job Summary
This position is responsible for developing tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties
- Oversee revenue recognition, compliance, reporting, and financial monitoring for 90+ complex contracts tied to allocations and reimbursable expenses; fee for service contracts; grants and awards from foundations, corporations, and individuals.
- Collaborates with the CEO to engage the board, finance, audit, and investment committees around issues, trends, and changes in the financial model(s) and operational delivery.
- Assesses organizational performance monthly, quarterly, and annually against both the annual budget and company’s long-term strategy.
- Oversees short, medium, and long-term budgetary planning and costs management in alignment with company strategic plan, as the organization considers sponsorships, potential acquisitions, and collaborations with external organizations.
- Partners with the CEO to set the financial goals and strategy of the organization.
- Uses extensive knowledge of QuickBooks to make recommendations to staff and support the Controller in management of the day-to-day operations.
- Knowledge and experience in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of an accounting system.
Job Duties
- Serves as a member of executive leadership team. Participates in corporate policy development as a member of the executive management team.
- Participates in key decisions pertaining to strategic initiatives, financial modeling, and operational execution.
- Manages all financing and banking relationships.
- Represents the Organization to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
- Prepares and maintains regular financial reports, dashboards and KPIs for the CEO, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Completes analysis of financial results and develops recommendations both strategic and tactical.
- Participates in the analysis of various business initiatives (e.g., opening new operations, asset acquisition, new service/program launches) and executes final decisions utilizing forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses.
- Provides the direction for the fiscal department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions.
- Supports the Controller in the maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial policies and procedures.
- Ensures timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and the CEO, Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors.
- Oversees preparation of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial statements; ensures legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
- Supports the Controller in the completion of all month-end closing activities including general ledger maintenance, balance sheet reconciliations and corporate/overhead cost allocations.
- Provides the knowledge and direction for cash, investment, and asset management; creates and oversees cash flow planning to ensure availability of funds, as needed.
- Coordinates audits and proper filing of tax returns in collaboration with Controller; remains up to date on non-profit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding non-profit operations.
- Oversees the execution of business contracts and relationships, including but not limited to, insurance, real estate and equipment leases and property tax exemptions.
- Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises the Controller and provides leadership to the entire Fiscal department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent, CPA and/or MBA, required. Ten or more years’ experience as a CFO or equivalent, preferably in a non-profit organization with a budget of at least $10M. Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software packages. Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies. Significant experience in or knowledge of non-profit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
Certificates, Licenses And/or Registrations
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
