Job Overview:
The Chief Technologist is a health care professional specialized in delivering therapeutic radiation to patients in the treatment of cancer as ordered by the Radiation Oncologist. Under the direct supervision of the Regional Director and Radiation Oncologist, the Chief Therapist supervises the clinical operation of the Radiation Oncology Department, including external beam treatment, brachytherapy procedures, Cyberknife, GammaKnife, CT simulator, and simulations. He/she is responsible for maintaining quality patient care by interacting with the patient, family, physician, radiation therapist(s), appropriate nursing staff, and ancillary departments acting as a liaison between disciplines as necessary. The Chief Therapist will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and evaluation of the technical therapy staff. He/she will maintain the established department policies, procedures, objectives, safety, quality, and performance improvement initiatives. He/she will assist the Regional Director with administrative functions as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Graduate of an Approved American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)(T) Radiation Therapy School Certification/Licensure
- Certification and Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)(T) State of New Jersey License
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Must be able to multitask, possess excellent customer service skills, excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and excellent organizational skills
- Goal and outcome oriented
- Must be computer-literate and proficient in MS Word and Outlook, Knowledge of and experience using an Oncology Information System/EMR

Essential Functions:
- Delivers/documents daily treatment in accordance with physician prescription. Constructs and/or utilizes immobilization devices according to the physician's prescription. Performs the duties of a radiation therapist as required, and ensures adherence to all policies and procedures. Performs CT scan and simulates, or supervises simulation of patients, using simulator, computed tomography, and other devices to accurately localize treatment target(s) under the direction of the radiation oncologist. Explain the procedure to patients, prepare supplies needed for simulation, and monitor patient and equipment during the procedure. Position and immobilize the patient using available tools and instrumentation as required (e.g., lasers, fiducial markers). Accurately charge the patient for any/all procedures as applicable. Ensure department employees are trained and competent in all areas of Radiation Therapy, including but not limited to, linear accelerators, EMR's, and treatment record and verify systems.
- Organizes his/her work and sets priorities to ensure efficient workflow and seeks guidance as appropriate from Regional Director. Holds a daily huddle with the team to ensure communication across the disciplines. Keeps track of all inventory and supplies. Orders supplies as needed for therapists and nurses. Ensures proper PPE is available for all staff. Utilizes EMR to ensure patient efficiency and timeliness of care from Consult to treatment. Able to perform morning QA of all department equipment. Able to troubleshoot minor equipment failure and contact the appropriate vendor(s) for repairs.
- Participates in monthly staff meetings and QA meetings as necessary. Checks charts prior to the start of radiation, and verifies all clinical information is accurate prior to the course of therapy. Coordinates radiation therapy services and establishes positive rapport interdepartmentally across the institution. Performs mold room duties and ensures safety compliance. Provides input into the development of policies and procedures. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current industry literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
- Responsible for relaying all pertinent simulation and treatment information to radiation therapists for quality outcomes. Applies knowledge and skills in treatment planning and fabrication of treatment aids. Follows safety procedures to protect the patient, staff, and themselves from overexposure to radiation. Researches and participates in the selection of new devices and modalities for improved therapeutic use of radiation. Examines treatment machines, devices, and equipment to make sure they are safe and meet infection control and quality standards. Participates in the clinical instruction and supervision of radiation therapy students. Participates in weekly chart rounds and ensures all quality and safety metrics are met for each patient. Keeps a weekly record of the chart of patients and attendees. Participates in the implementation of clinical protocols in the department of radiation oncology.
- Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Radiation department. Solicits help from other departments when needed to address department issues (facilities, IT, transport, etc.). Reports all concerns to the Regional Director and meets weekly to review department workflow, performance, and operation. Directly supervises the work of radiation therapists functions including: recommendations for hiring, discipline, technical competency evaluation, orientation, PTO scheduling, training, work assignments, and conflict resolution. Demonstrates professionalism with families, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and supervisors. Supports teamwork by cooperative problem-solving through participation in meetings, committees, projects, etc.
