As manager of the Perianesthesia Department, the PACU Flow Manager has direct responsibilityformaximizingefficiencyofpatientflow,controllingthetransferofpatients to and from the Operating Room /Procedural Areas to the PACU.
As part of The management team, time will be spent directing and monitoring patient flow in the extremely complex, high patient volume PACU.Decisions made regarding patient flow and PACU department utilization havedirectimpactontheexpenditureofresourcesandmaximization of revenues.
This position is the key controller, facilitator, and integrator of the effectiveness and efficiency withwhichthedailydynamicschedulefunctions.ThePACUFlowManagerworksincollaboration with the anesthesia floor leader, nursing management, and surgeons in determining, through critical judgment and decision-making, that optimum utilization is attained and maintained.
ThePACUFlowManagerwilldevelopandpromoteateamphilosophyandinterdisciplinary collaboration among staff to foster a continuum of care for the perioperative patient.

· Directstheefficientflow andmovementof patients to and from the PACU department.
· Establishes effective communications with nursing management, anesthesia floor leader, surgeon,andhospitaladministrationtoensureefficientutilizationofthePACU department.
· Ensuresthatoptimumutilizationismaintainedwithminimumuseofovertimeandadditional staff.
· Establishesandsustainssuccessfulexternalrelationshipswithancillarydepartmentstoassure smooth and efficient functioning of the PACU department.
· Developsandmaintainsaplanoforganizationwhichfacilitatescongruencywith organizational goals.
· MonitorstheaccuracyoftheEpicschedulingprogramandinteractswithInformation Systems to ensure that the integrity of the system is maintained.
· Plansforadditionalstaffingasneededandsecuresresourceswithconsiderationofbudget impact.
· Implements andmonitorsadherencetopersonnelanddepartmental policies.
· Establishesandmaintainsanenvironmentconducivetohighmoraleandjobsatisfaction, fulfillment of staff goals, and delivery of optimum performance.
· Performsallotherdutiesas assigned.
Qualifications:
• Graduated from an approved school of nursing; bachelor’s degree required, MSN preferred.
• Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Massachusetts.
• Extensive knowledge of patient flow and emergency department operations.
• Continually update clinical knowledge & skills through formal and informal education and review of the current literature.
• Proven ability to work well independently, possess sound decision making skills and work effectively when required to make and facilitate complex decisions.

· Mustpossessstronginterpersonalcommunicationandnegotiationskillstoprovideeffective leadership for promoting interdisciplinary collaborative team work.
· Must possess strong analytical and organizational abilities in order to make effective decisionsinanexpedientmannerwhilemaintaininghighqualitycarestandards.Mustbe able to appropriately prioritize room and staffing resources based upon patient needs and established protocols.Uses expertise and judgment in determining appropriate patient placement.
· Must demonstrate ability to effectively communicate, negotiate, and problem solve with physicianstaffoverPACU bayassignments.Mustoftenactasaliaisonbetween staff and physicians in determining most appropriate resource allocation.
· Mustdemonstratefairandequitablepracticeinassigningstaff,determiningovertime,and providing input into performance evaluations.
· Mustbeableto promoteacustomer-oriented philosophyamong all staffwithin the area.
· Mustdemonstrateindependentjudgmentwithinthescopeofthisposition,whilemaintaining effectiverelationswithoutsidereferringorganizations,internalphysicians,anddepartmental staff.
· Abilitytoworkunderextremelystressful conditions.
·Mustbeabletoutilizecomputerapplications programs.Working Conditions:·ThePerianesthesia departmentisastressful,highvolumeandhighacuitypatient careenvironment. Work is underground with no windows or exposure to natural light.There is a possible exposure to infectious diseases.
