For more than 40 years, RA’s client has provided innovative applications of optical technology, both products and services, to commercial, government, and consumer products organizations in a variety of industries worldwide. Their engineering team is the largest independent optical engineering group in the world, managing all aspects of instrument design, including optics, mechanics, electronics and software systems, in addition to offering in house Optical Test and Measurement Services to benchmark and assess the performance of customer lens or camera systems. Their team continues to improve existing metrology product lines and develop new products that they manufacture and install around the globe.
The Position:
The Director of Engineering/Engineering Services position at RA’s client is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing their multidisciplinary engineering team and their Engineering Services business. Reporting to the President you will provide line management leadership of an interdisciplinary engineering team, Optical, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Concurrently you will have frontward facing customer responsibilities and provide leadership to the Engineering Services business.
The successful candidate for this role will have strong leadership skills, a proven track record in managing engineering teams, and the ability to drive continuous improvement and growth, preferably in Optics and Photonics driven organizations.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and execute a strategic plan for the Engineering Services Division, including developing strategies for growing existing markets and engaging new markets.
- Lead internal R&D initiatives, hiring efforts, developing new capabilities and partnerships, etc.
- Evaluate group performance and achieve goals for project and customer success
- Manage group leads (optical, mechanical, electrical, program management)
- Support customer engagement, scope programs and write proposals
Qualifications & Skills:
- BS/MS/PhD in Optics, Mechanics, Electronics, or related field
- Minimum 15 years working in product development with a focus on productizing optical technologies
- Deep expertise in a broad range of optical technologies – with experience in at least some of the following: imaging optics & lens design, microscopy, free space communications, illumination, etc
- Very comfortable engaging customers, intuiting needs and understanding program risks
- Experience in estimating scope of projects including manpower and resource requirements
- Critical thinking/analytical leadership experience
- Experience presenting to senior executive audiences
- Must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and results goal oriented
- Excellent communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills.
