The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a global, nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., working to improve environmental sustainability, human health, and resilience in the built environment through its programs and rating systems including LEED.
TheDirector of Operations and Enablementwill ensure that departmental strategies and plans are devised nationally with an optimized workflow and implemented locally and regionally.
Reporting directly to the U.S. Managing Director and working closely with U.S. MT&D staff members and cross-functional departments, the Director of Operations and Enablement will be an integral part of the effort to drive and realize growth. This position will provide internal focus essential to supporting a thriving and growing department, including delivery of high-value and quality engagements, client-oriented market development strategies and tools, and streamlined operational processes that meet USGBC standards and enable team success.
The Director will be responsible for facilitating strategic planning by determining and aligning priorities across the team. In collaboration with the Operations and Enablement direct reports, the Director will oversee operational processes within the team to ensure effective resource allocation, financial management, and compliance with USGBC-wide policies and best practices. This position will perform ongoing assessments to ensure the departmental strategies, structures, and work plans are aligned and optimized for delivery against USGBC’s institutional priorities and remain responsive to evolving trends and external needs. Further, the Director will ensure consistent and accurate fiscal oversight, and raise the bar for personnel management, data collection, volunteer governance, and partnerships. The Director will manage a small team of individuals that will support this work.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and oversight to general business operations, including fiscal management, administrative functions, and human resources.
- Lead department implementation of operational policies, procedures, and business practices, including staff training, annual revisions, and process improvement in collaboration with cross-functional departments.
- Partner with the Managing Director to implement the annual budgeting process as set forth by the Finance department.
- Drive execution and develop resource allocation recommendations to align with priorities.
- Promote employee engagement, team, and people development (including investing meaningfully in the development of junior staff), DEI, and culture-building opportunities.
- Provide leadership and oversight to the national strategy and local implementation of programs, engagements, and partnerships.
- Ensure quality engagements are hosted in key markets to reach new audiences under a cohesive brand and uniform approach with local and regional customization.
- Ensure the development and institutionalization of optimum sales effectiveness for all assigned USGBC/GBCI products.
- Strengthen and widen USGBC’s presence through local and regional partnerships with like-minded organizations.
- Curate enablement-focused training curriculum, and ongoing education initiatives through a blend of classroom, virtual, recorded, and onsite instruction.
- Assure a healthy network of volunteer leadership through strong communication, clear and consistent roles, and strengthening a leadership pipeline by leveraging engagements.
- Support the data and technology needs for the development and tracking of key metrics to meet departmental and organizational goals.
- Aid in change management and adoption/utilization of emerging processes and technologies.
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
- At least 7 years of directly related experience, plus at least 3 years of experience successfully managing teams.
- Valid LEED Green Associate or LEED Accredited Professional credential is preferred.

- Experience with public speaking and ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences.
- Proficiency in MS Office systems and digital collaboration tools strongly preferred.

- Ability to travel periodically within the U.S.

Employee Supervision:
This role includes supervision of direct reports.
Travel Requirements:
This position may require travel up to 20%.
