Job Description:
The rapidly growing Land Systems division of Saab Inc. is seeking a dynamic Senior System Safety Engineer with experience in munitions and missile weapon systems safety. The candidate is expected to possess a deep understanding of the weapon system safety aspects, including system hazards, energetics storage and transportation, system safety, arming, and fuzing, etc., as applied throughout the full product lifecycle. The engineer will advise program management and engineering on the system safety design and implementation, prepare required documentation, interact with relevant government agencies and support system integration and testing from a safety perspective.
The results-oriented candidate should take initiative, exhibit technical knowledge and leadership, multi-task, and provide feasible safety solutions. The engineer will work closely with the project and program leadership, engineering and functional teams across businesses and locations, as required. Currently, the position is remote home office with travel; relocation may be necessary to a future division home location, at this time TBD.
Potential candidate will:
- Utilize mastered skills and techniques to help solve system safety problems and meet product safety requirements across multiple products, projects, and teams.
- Participate in development, verification, and test activities of diverse, multi-functional scope (hardware, software, human interface, existing interfaces, schedule constraints, etc.) where solutions require evaluation and balancing of a variety of factors, including system safety.
- Influence product and system architecture and development to account for safety-specific engineering requirements.
- Interact with program management, engineering, operations, and other functions to define, develop, and implement the most effective system safety solutions for a given project execution, often based on limited requirements and inputs, while providing compliance with Department of Defense products and company quality and safety requirements.
- Advise relevant program authorities and functions on DoD, DoT and other USG agencies' approved storage, transportation, and logistic requirements necessary for energetics handling.
- Contribute to proposal efforts as a subject matter expert, requirements reviewer, content and cost generator.
- Produce and review professional, high-quality system safety required documentation.
- Work closely with existing products' design authorities and jointly generate best solutions for given problems, as well as communicate effectively with suppliers, customers, and teammates, both domestically and internationally.
- Actively assist Land Systems engineering with other division efforts, including production support, failure investigations, and troubleshooting in the system safety domain.
Compensation Range: $85,000- $106,200
The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.
Skills and Experience:
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or relevant discipline and minimum 8 years of experience in related field, Master of Science in Engineering and minimum 6 years of experience, or Doctor of Science and minimum 4 years of experience.
- Hands-on, direct, multi-discipline experience with weapon systems safety (missiles, munitions, and platforms in land, sea, and air domains) concepts of operation, requirements, design, manufacturing, integration, test, production, and life cycle sustainment.
- Working experience with DoD safety review boards and industry engineering processes, procedures, requirements, tools, and practices, including required safety documentation generation and approval processes.
- System safety hazard assessment planning and execution experience, for both new developments and production.
- Effective communications with leadership, subordinates, and peers, both domestically and internationally.
- Self-starter, working with minimum direction or close supervision.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to receive DoD clearance (Secret as a minimum, existing clearance a plus).
- International and domestic travel is required, at least 30%. May require extended travel during integration and test activities.
Desired Experience and Skills:
- Experience with autonomous systems of multiple domains, both crewed and uncrewed.
- Experience with smart weapons safety-specific aspects of engineering, including system navigation, motion controls, target acquisition and tracking, guidance systems, fire control, power management, platform integration, and target defeat.
