Director of Indirect Tax at a Growth-Oriented Energy Company
Build the technical expertise to establish a foundation as a multi-faceted tax professional. Work within a small group providing experience across various topics regularly. Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, you will have the ability to partner with multiple levels of management to review and optimize the department based on best practices.
Key activities include:
- Supervise and provide final approval of monthly journal accrual entries related to tax specific items.
- Review and approve monthly/quarterly reconciliation of tax accounts.
- Assist in review and approval of tax returns for various fuel excise and sales/use tax.
- Support and facilitate responses and research related to various state and federal authority inquiries.
- Confirm proper setups related to customer exemptions and coding for counterparties including tax consequences of sale and purchase transactions.
- Oversee the communication with customers and vendors to ensure proper documentation is retained for all tax exemptions/tax treatment of transactions.
- Provide advisory services to other departments including accurate and timely analysis and research.
- Confirm and approve calculations for requests of periodic tax payments.
- Facilitate workflow with both internal staff and external consultants.
- Assess overall compliance function and system capabilities to identify risk areas and implement appropriate controls and procedures.
- Provide mentoring to all tax professionals in the Tax Department.
- Maintain relationship with the IT Group and external consultants supporting enhancements to existing and future SAP environment as it relates to indirect tax data requirements.
- Assist in research for federal, state, or local tax issues, particularly for new markets.
- Involvement as needed for indirect tax planning and due diligence on M&A targets.
- Become involved in understanding the business as a whole and relied upon for planning and business development decisions as they relate to tax.

Qualifications
To meet the basic qualifications for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship.
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in Accounting/Tax.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in tax ideally with an emphasis in fuel excise tax compliance with bulk/rack reporting.
- CPA or eligible a plus.
- Strong working knowledge of Excel including formulas, pivot tables, VLOOKUP.
- Self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills for multiple projects and tasks.
- Attention to detail and analytical ability to notice inconsistencies.
- Understand and recognize time sensitive items and adapt schedule to ensure deadlines are met.
