The Director of Engineering will drive the review, selection, and implementation of all major equipment and process improvements focused on optimizing production efficiencies, CAPEX reduction, environmental stewardship, and manufacturing of new products. Provides engineering, scientific, and personnel management over the engineering group. Advises executive management towards establishing the process technology roadmap, as well as short-term and long-term strategic Company goals. Tracks resource loading across engineering, and maps progress towards achieving goals. Maintains expertise in managing other engineering personnel and managers, setting individual SMART goals, personal and technical mentoring, performance reviews, and group meetings.
Recognized as a leader across the Company. Significantly contributes to improvement of people and project managing across engineering. Collaborates across the Company to develop and implement new processes, improve and advance existing processes, and grow the IP portfolio. Maintains excellent records of their team and work. Provides critical updates and reports to support internal and external (e.g., customer) quality systems. Responsible for identifying patentable inventions and acting as principal investigator in conducting projects across engineering and other divisions of the Company as appropriate, such as R&D and/or Production. Provides mentoring for technical project managers across the Company. Typically, heads an Organization Chart of 10+ engineering personnel. Maintains excellent safety record and fosters culture of fast-paced continuous improvement of safety, efficiency, and quality across the Company.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
- Drive process and equipment improvements for Group14 battery materials Manufacturing.
- Direct process development and engineering teams consisting of plant engineers, process engineers, materials scientists, drafters, and modelers.
- Direct all aspects of capital projects associated with process development.
- Exercise process safety fundamentals to ensure safe design, as well as mentor newer engineers on the application and considerations for safe design.
- Support project engineers in the execution and delivery of projects.
- Lead the down selection process of new equipment vendors, manage vendor relationships, and negotiation new vendor contracts.
- Interphase with the IP team on generation and documentation of process-related intellectual property.
- Work with the R&D and Product teams to develop solutions to problems and improve production throughput, cost, product quality and process safety.
- Support construction management efforts at Group14 HQ and serve to create systems that can be implemented across production sites.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Candidate must have 10+ years of engineering experience in an industrial or pilot development environment.
- Experience in engineering leadership (5+ years).
- Capital projects management ($5 million).
- Technology transfer leadership experience in an industrial setting.
OTHER QUALITIES WE’D LOVE FOR YOU TO HAVE:
- Experience with managing government contracts and grants.
- Experience leading teams in development and implementation of novel materials or products manufacturing at scale.
- Experience in bulk solids handling and/or thermal processing equipment.
- Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) or Risk Management Program (RMP) covered facilities.
- Experience with construction management.

The annual base salary range for this position is $170,000 - $220,000. All positions come with a company bonus and stock options. The actual base pay offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include, the applicant’s qualifications for the position; years of relevant experience; specific and unique skills; level of education attained; certifications or other professional licenses held; other legitimate, non-discriminatory business factors specific to the position; and the geographic location in which the position is located.
