The Managing Director, Climate and Nature will be responsible for building and leading BSR’s Climate and Nature teams globally, and driving BSR’s work on those issues across consulting, grants, and collaborative initiatives. The Managing Director will be part of BSR’s global Engagement Leadership Team, which leads strategy development, issue integration, and performance oversight across all of BSR’s programmatic areas. The Managing Director will set strategy and oversee business performance for the Climate and Nature teams, for example related to work on:
- Net zero transformation, business within planetary boundaries, climate justice and just transition, climate
- scenario analysis, scope 3 implementation, climate disclosure and other subjects;
- Nature assessment, nature strategy and road-mapping, SBTN target setting, and TNFD implementation.
This position is full-time, ideally based in New York, San Francisco, or Washington, DC. London, Copenhagen, or Paris considered. Remote locations in the United States may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
Working with the leads for the Climate and Nature teams (6 direct reports and 25 in total), ensure development of strategy and delivery of offerings, project work, member service and thought leadership for both teams. Working with relevant teams, contribute to setting and achievement of annual sales and revenue targets, as well as the development of BSR’s strategy, offerings, and impact. Lead and oversee the performance and development of people in the climate and nature teams. Mentor climate and nature team members to improve skills and effectiveness.
Project Directorship and Delivery
The Managing Director will play a leading role in delivery, oversight, and hands-on support for consulting services, grant-supported projects, and collaborations to companies across a range of sectors. The Managing Director will work actively with project teams and provide thought partnership to project managers.
Business Development and Member Company Engagement
The Managing Director will be responsible for deepening relationships with business leaders at BSR member companies and beyond and driving revenue generation ($6M+ in FY24) in partnership with the leaders of BSR’s global industry and area of expertise teams. The Managing Director will draw from an established set of BSR tools and cases to facilitate these business development activities including generating project work such as consulting, grants, and collaborative initiatives.
External Representation
The Managing Director will represent BSR in external events, by presenting at conferences such as COP and Climate Week; demonstrating thought leadership through writing and publishing blogs, reports, etc.; forming beneficial external relationships and partnerships; staying current on key developments shaping climate action, and proactively working to create opportunities to raise the profile of BSR more broadly.
Compensation
At BSR we have implemented a transparent total compensation framework with an emphasis on internal equity. In order to maintain our equity our hiring range for this position are listed below. Location adjustment will apply if the successful candidate resides in New York or San Francisco.
Starting Salary Ranges:
US: $150,356-$170,000 (plus 12% target bonus)
Paris: 107,182€-120,580€ (plus 12% target bonus)
Copenhagen: 836,392 kr.-940,941 kr. (plus 12% target bonus)
London: £108,463-£122,021 (plus 12% target bonus)
Qualifications
Note: ONLY candidates with these specific requirements will be considered:
- Deep knowledge and experience in key climate or nature content areas, such as the areas of work listed above.
- Track record of success in business development, relationship management, and exercising influence on sustainable business matters with senior leaders.
- Strong understanding of the “ecosystem” of organizations and individuals who shape private sector actions on climate and nature.
- Significant experience (at least 12-15 years) required to lead and oversee consulting projects including: developing and maintaining senior-level relationships; pursuing and creating business opportunities; and overseeing multiple projects.
- Demonstrated ability to represent BSR in important business and climate events, and with media.
- Knowledge and experience related to business processes such as strategic planning, organizational development, procurement, performance management, change management, etc.
- Proven leadership and people skills, including a demonstrated ability to mentor other team members to improve skills and effectiveness.
- Outstanding verbal, written, and facilitation skills.
- Willingness to undertake business travel (up to 25% of time).
- Language skills: One European language relevant to our work (French and Spanish in particular) a plus.
