Position Overview: The Complex Liability Solutions Underwriting Director will take an active role in strategic planning with line management to develop and implement an underwriting strategy that identifies profitable market opportunities. This role has accountability for referrals, the establishment of underwriting guidelines, and the development and implementation of underwriting training in support of Complex Liability Solutions. This includes mentoring underwriters on technical insurance skills and industry-specific knowledge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work closely with field underwriters to understand and evaluate new business opportunities and renewals that will deliver planned financial results.
- Consult field underwriters on all accounts from prospect stage through final approval stage as needed.
- Serve as a teacher and mentor to field and renewal underwriters.
- Engage in project work that further advances our underwriting vision and capabilities in the marketplace.
- Ensure that underwriting strategies supporting profitable growth are consistently followed throughout the assigned underwriting team.
- Proactively implement corrective action as necessitated by macro business trends, regional issues, or individual performance challenges in partnership with division leaders and line management.
- Take a portfolio view of the business when making recommendations on individual accounts, product offerings, or underwriting strategy.
- Analyze new opportunities to make decisions based on individual risk characteristics, exposure analysis, hazard recognition, and controls.
- Price business according to Company underwriting and pricing guidelines.
Leadership and Talent Development:
- Participate in leadership meetings at division and national level.
- Lead monthly underwriting study group sessions.
- Conduct QA for the team as needed in partnership with other management resources.
- Interface effectively with other business units within the Company, including operations & actuarial, to improve overall results and profitability.
- Ensure the use of best practices and compliance with all Company practices and policies.
Technical/Functional Skills and Qualifications:
- 10+ years underwriting experience, specifically with a focus and expertise in general liability and umbrella/excess.
- Strong influencing and communication skills with demonstrated ability to engage with senior management internally and externally with customers/clients.
- Prior experience in complex, high hazard general liability business. Experience with deductibles and Self Insured Retentions is preferred.
- Prior experience in leading projects or as an assigned mentor or trainer is highly desired.
- Demonstrated underwriting, agency/territorial management, financial/business acumen, and strategic leadership skills.
- Strong technical underwriting skills with the ability to make timely and quality complex underwriting decisions.
- Able to achieve results through impact and influence.
- Ability to deal with ambiguity in a matrixed organization; ability to guide, influence, and navigate effectively with different constituencies in achieving company goals.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Team player with outstanding inter-personal, negotiation, and organizational influencing skills; proven stakeholder/relationship management skills and leadership behaviors.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- CPCU or other related designation(s) attractive.
Compensation: The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency, and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is: $134,480 - $201,720.
