A Bit About Us:
We are Arcadia Science. Arcadia is a science company founded and led by scientists. Our mission is to transform evolutionary innovations into real-world solutions by openly developing more efficient, replicable, and sustainable ways to leverage the biology of diverse organisms.
The Opportunity:
We are looking for a full-stack software engineer who loves building user-friendly software products for scientists. To accelerate Arcadia’s goal of creating innovative biotech companies, we are developing an internal product that provides strategic guidance for our company creation studio by integrating evolutionary insights with experimental capabilities and broader market strategy. Our ideal candidate for this role has strong computational skills, experience iterating on 0 → 1 products in a fast-paced environment, and a natural engineering mindset. This role is a great fit for engineers interested in breaking into biotechnology and therapeutics – no direct experience in the life sciences is required. To ensure a dynamic environment for interactions and learning across multi-disciplinary teams, this role is onsite at our headquarters in Berkeley. Top candidates will have a strong software engineering background, excellent product design skills, and fluency with modern web development frameworks (e.g. React, TypeScript, Tailwind, Python). Given our goal of making our tools as widely available as possible, open source software experience is a big plus.
Responsibilities:
- Work onsite at Arcadia’s HQ alongside entrepreneurs, researchers, and engineers to convert Arcadia’s scientific platform into new software products for company creation.
- Work closely with the product team to ensure the product is user-friendly and meets the needs of scientist users through rapid iteration cycles.
- Architect, develop, and maintain our internal product suite using standard web technologies to be scalable, performant, and delightful to use.
- Provide ongoing support and maintenance for the product, including bug fixes and feature enhancements.
- Leverage computational biology, machine learning, and bioinformatics skills to enhance the data exploration capabilities of the product.
Education/Experience:
- BA/BS in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, mathematics, or a related field.
- Extensive experience (3+ years) in building production-level software for data exploration and visualization.
- Proficiency with JavaScript, React, and other web technologies.
- Proficiency with some backend language (we use Python with FastAPI).
- Proficiency with relational databases like Postgres.
- Experience with environment management or containerization tools (Conda, Docker, etc.).
- Track record of taking new projects from idea to high quality technical product with a focus on delightful end-user experiences; previous startup experience a plus.
- Interest in / understanding of evolutionary and molecular biology (direct experience not required).
- Hands-on experience working with complex and large datasets.
- Experience with software engineering practices (version control, CI/CD pipelines, etc.).
- DevOps experience (i.e. working with Terraform or CloudFormation for orchestrating deployments) is a big plus, but not a requirement.
- Is highly adaptable and able to start and stop various projects as well as pivot with the organization as it grows.
- Ability to move fast in an environment where things are sometimes loosely defined.
The expected salary range is $150,000-$225,000 per year with generous equity and benefits, depending on experience level. The position will require the individual to be on-site at our Berkeley, California headquarters.
