Responsible for assisting with the coordination and maintenance of the efficient utilization of available imaging time and human resources within the division on a daily basis. Staff may be required to float among radiology clinics associated with BWH as needed. These sites are, but not limited to: 75 Francis Street Boston MA, 850 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill MA, and 20 Patriot Place Foxborough, MA.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs all staff technologist duties as assigned and required.
- Working with the Assistant Chief Technologist/Chief Technologist assists and coordinates patient flow within the division on a daily basis. Assists clerical and support staff within the division as necessary.
- Performs Quality Control checks for exams and equipment as established by the division. Possess a thorough knowledge of equipment operations, imaging techniques, protocols, and equipment troubleshooting. Identifies equipment problems and communicates to immediate supervisor.
- Monitors adherence to safety policies established within the hospital and division.
- Actively involved in ongoing Quality Improvement Projects within the division (C-list, patient waiting time, etc.).
- Participates in orientation and instruction of various personnel and technology students (medical radiography, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine) within the division. Assists with the facilitation of the ongoing development of all staff within the division.
- Maintains effective working relations and communication with divisional and other hospital personnel, i.e. professional, nursing, etc. Assist professional staff with the development of protocols and research projects.
- Maintains availability of supplies and inventory as assigned by divisional procedure. Ensures all expendable products are within safe use periods.
- Works in conjunction with the Assistant Chief to adjust staffing schedules as needed.
- In conjunction with the Assistant Chief and technologist(s) assumes on-call coverage and shifts not covered by the staff. To remain flexible in all shift coverage situations.
- Uses independent judgement, ingenuity and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing exams and assisting other hospital personnel.
- Rotates within department, divisions and all off site clinics, by shifts as required and needed; cooperates with all personnel, promoting harmony within department.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have graduated from an approved school of Radiologic Technology.
- Must possess a valid permanent Massachusetts license as a Radiologic Technologist.
- Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or equivalent.
- 2-4 years of progressive experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
- Has obtained or is pursuing an educational degree equal to 2 years of college preparation.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
- Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross sectional anatomy.
- Work requires several weeks of training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques and methods.
- Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.
- Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.
- Must be physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).
- A comprehensive understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information System that integrate with the Department of Radiology relating to patient information such as, registering patients and generating Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement reports.
- Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.
- Must be aware of hazards within the department (ionizing radiation, universal precautions, etc.) and adhere to safety standards established by BWH and regulatory agencies.
- Able to work in changing environments (reduced lighting, increased noise, temperature variances, unpleasant odors, etc.).
- Communication skills sufficient to resolve conflicts, and relay information concisely to staff, patients and other hospital personnel.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be prepared to work overtime, holidays and weekends as needed.
- Works in a large open area in radiology, which is noisy and tends to have extreme temperature and humidity variations.
- Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation when using proper safety procedures.
- Continuous standing and lifting.
- Exposure to human waste and disease.
- Considerable stress from dealing with a wide variety of hospital staff, patients and families.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct supervision in the segment of the division where directly responsible for day-to-day operations of the division with both short and long term consequences resulting in patient delays, inadequate records, and employee morale and working conditions.
