JSI Research & Training Institute (JSI) is a global nonprofit dedicated to improving lives around the world through greater health, education, and socio-economic equity for individuals and communities. Within JSI, the Health Services Division evaluates and strengthens the public health and publicly funded health systems in the United States.
Individuals in the Data Scientist I role assist in developing and implementing data collection strategies and analytical tools, support the management and analysis of health data, and contribute to program evaluations. In this role, apply rigorous, equity-centered data practices and engage in collaborative project work to improve programmatic and public health outcomes.
Salary range: $60,923-$93,948 based on location & experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support or coordinate mixed-methods program evaluation activities.
- Support or coordinate data collection, documentation, reporting, and analysis activities.
- With supervision, assist a project team and clients at local organizations, state health departments, health care providers and federal agencies in the development of data collection plans, databases and data systems, data management, and data analysis using diverse platforms, from tabular data to large enterprise-level data systems/portals to server and cloud-based storage systems.
- Develop and assist database developers to use diverse project-based database systems, assess data content/structures, and develop data extraction/query logic to obtain needed information.
- Run statistical analyses under guidance from senior data scientists.
- Support the development of data collection tools and templates.
- Use or assist database developers to use diverse database systems, assess data content/structures, and develop data extraction/query logic to obtain needed information.
- Conduct quality assurance checks and learn to develop automated reports in databases based on project objectives and client needs.
- Assist in the development of analytic summaries, presentations, and reports of data analyses conducted.
- Learns to apply adaptive thinking to data collection, management, quality, and utilization challenges through openness to considering innovative solutions and participating in iterative discussions.
- Contribute to internal and external presentations and reports under supervision. Assist with applying data visualization techniques and concepts to data presentation
- Help to provide ongoing database user support and technical assistance to clients and grantee data staff.
- Assist with technical proposals, including supporting development of data science and/or evaluation sections of technical approaches and analytical plans, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Requires a Master’s degree in data-related field with at least 1 year of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated foundational knowledge, application, and interest in database programming and a range of software platforms and programming languages including required use of SQL and MySQL.
- Commitment to advancing health and racial equity.
- Track record working independently and in teams.
- Basic competency in data acquisition, structuring, cleaning, and performing data quality checks.
- Familiarity with basic program evaluation, qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis concepts. Demonstrates cultural humility and openness to ideas from diverse perspectives.
- Demonstrated ability to query, analyze, and synthesize information from multiple sources, including enterprise database development environments, and engage in productive and iterative discussions, and navigate new challenges with curiosity and resilience.
- Ability to present analytic results in both graphical and tabular formats.
- Strong interest in working in other database and reporting software platforms and languages (e.g., SQL, Tableau, SAS/SPSS, Excel, MS Access, R, SQL, REDCap, Alchemer, Tableau).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by organized and clear written deliverables and ability to communicate to diverse audiences on a variety of platforms.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational, and time management skills.
