Overview:
The Head of Group Captive Underwriting will report to the EVP, Sales, Advisory & Analytics with a primary objective to enhance production revenue while effectively managing the renewals of the existing portfolio. You will be responsible for shaping and driving the overall business strategy and appetite for Underwriting within our Group Captive portfolio. This role is fundamental to our ability to grow the business profitably and strategically.
How you'll make an impact:
- Work with the Artex Head of Sales to put in place production strategies and underwriting capabilities to increase sales within the overall Group Captive strategy. You will explore options within the Casualty space to enhance revenue along with creating opportunities for growth across other business lines.
- Lead and manage the new business underwriting team to help achieve business unit goals. Be responsible for the design and presentation of ongoing training seminars for the underwriting team and the sales/production team.
- Be responsible for the implementation, design and monitoring of Underwriting Strategy in accordance with Group policyholder risk appetite. This includes the limits, pricing analysis and policyholder selection.
- Oversee and be responsible for group captive renewals, working with Captive Directors to attain best terms for the captive client base. This will involve negotiating with insurance carriers on pricing, terms and conditions.
- Ensure appropriate pricing tools, systems and controls are in place and adhered to for the monitoring of product underwriting activities, including exposure, income, risk, and performance.
- Be responsible for the risk selection and setting of terms & conditions to ensure the achievement of price adequacy, and compliance with underwriting guidelines and procedures on complex referrals.
- Be principally responsible for insurance carrier management, articulating with fronting carriers and reinsurers the underwriting strategy of each group captive and serving to leverage relationships for client participation.
- Pro-active stakeholder engagement including attending Group Captive board meetings. Meet with clients, brokers and fronting insurance carriers as needed to reinforce Artex Group underwriting positions. Work collaboratively with Captive Boards’ to influence underwriting strategy and ensure that their views are incorporated into Casualty underwriting strategies.
- Engage with key stakeholders across the Gallagher / Artex Group to formulate future Casualty plans that are both ambitious but realistic. Be responsible for identifying new Group Captive opportunities and identifying underwriting whitespace opportunities for clients.
- Transfer expectations and knowledge to new business underwriting team and Artex Sales team regarding Senior Management perceptions of acceptable and attractive risk and to ensure ‘buy-in’ to Underwriting Strategy. Work collaboratively with these parties to ensure the execution of the Group Dominant Priorities.
- Conduct product business reviews, including review of loss and industry information to identify systemic issues; product area deep dives; and quarterly report on product strategy and performance. Contribute to and monitor portfolio management tools to track Group Captive business.
- Monitor areas of emerging Liability exposure in order to make adjustments as appropriate.
- Close involvement with the actuarial team to continuously improve pricing and return on capital tools and to ensure that loss ratios in Casualty Business Plans are both robust and appropriate.
- Be responsible for ensuring that our underwriting process is timely, efficient and harnesses technology to enhance the new business application process for brokers and team members.
About you:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree and 7 years related experience required.
- Computer experience with a variety of applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as sufficient technological knowledge to facilitate decision-making regarding the direction of the automation systems.
- Able to drive and travel as needed. In-depth knowledge of the insurance brokerage business.
Preferred:
- Extensive casualty related experience in a variety of markets (E&S, Admitted)
- In-depth knowledge of insurance underwriting practices and procedures, skilled in analysing qualitative and quantitative data and decision making capability.
- Proven track record of directing and optimizing portfolios whilst simultaneously improving underwriting results.
- Proven track record in new product development and building a profitable book of business. Must show innovation on researching and launching new initiatives and strategies.
- Ability to explain complex insurance and reinsurance concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrable ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders across regions and the full spectrum of hierarchy.
- CPCU, ARe designations preferred;
- Willingness to travel.
