Known for quality programming throughout Central Indiana, WFYI Public Media provides more than just traditional radio and television services. WFYI has been involved as a community leader and partner in the arts, education, health, and public affairs since 1970.
We serve as a community partner where people can learn about important issues and discuss them in a calm and thoughtful manner. Our award-winning documentaries and public affairs programs have addressed many relevant topics including history, public policy, financial literacy, healthcare, workforce development, and environmental affairs. Our broadcast schedule combines with local community outreach programs to focus on developing successful solutions to local issues.
More than 80 professionals work hard at WFYI Public Media to make it Indiana’s premier PBS and NPR member station and one of Central Indiana’s leading not-for-profits. The WFYI headquarters is a state-of-the-art facility conveniently situated at 1630 N. Meridian St. in Indianapolis. The WFYI location is an Indianapolis media hub and a center for civic engagement.
WFYI is a proud member of both NPR and PBS. Our digital platforms reach audiences in a wide variety of ways including on-demand, streaming, and social media. Our public television broadcast signal covers a 58-mile radius over the most densely populated urban and rural areas of Indiana. Digital apps and streaming services, along with cable and satellite companies extend WFYI's educational television programming to residents in West Central and East Central Indiana, bringing WFYI Public Television's service area to more than two million households. WFYI’s radio service reaches nearly all of Central Indiana including the Greater Lafayette region and Terre Haute. More than 500,000 residents of Indiana utilize WFYI Public Media as a source for information, education, and entertainment every week.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Chief Development & Marketing Officer (CDMO) will report to the President and CEO, Greg Petrowich. In addition, the CDMO will be a member of the CEO’s Executive Leadership Team. The CDMO will oversee a team of 15, including two direct reports.
Primary Responsibilities
- Leading a strategic fundraising operation to increase support and sustainability including building and implementing a comprehensive strategic development plan.
- Increasing donor acquisition and revenue by leveraging existing relationships and creative new engagement techniques.
- Supporting the CEO and being a trusted partner of the Executive Leadership Team to advance support for WFYI’s mission and vision.
- Empowering and inspiring the Board of Directors in fundraising and engagement.
- Stewardship and relationship management with a major donor portfolio including corporate/foundations and individuals.
- Leading, mentoring, and developing a team of 15 professionals. Drive results, clarity, and accountability through sensible metrics.
- Networking and engagement with the wider Indianapolis and Public Broadcasting community.
- Enhancing fundraising through marketing leadership including events, communications, digital, and content teams.
- Operational leadership including budgeting, reporting, recruitment, and development systems.
- Data-driven analytics to maximize fundraising and marketing processes and strategies.
- Strong communication skills, including public engagement, writing, reporting, and transparent internal communications.
EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM
Greg Petrowich
President and CEO of WFYI Public Media in Indianapolis.
Petrowich has led WFYI for five years, expanding the organization’s reach and service through new programs and engagement activities, as well as expanded broadcast opportunities. He previously served ten years as the Executive Director of WSIU Public Broadcasting at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois. There he extended the public broadcasting reach of WSIU through a merger that now involves five full-power TV licenses serving 5 million people throughout much of Central and Southern Illinois, as well as portions of five surrounding states. For seven years prior, Petrowich led KUAC FM and TV in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he also served as the President of the Alaska Public Broadcasting Service. He started his career in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he served first as Operations Director and later as General Manager of KRCU, expanding public radio reach throughout the bootheel of Southeast Missouri.
Between 2009 and 2015, Petrowich was elected to two terms on the Board of Directors for National Public Radio (NPR). He currently serves on the Board of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
Experience And Qualifications
Proven Leadership and Success
- Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree in non-profit or business management, marketing, or related field and CFRE preferred.
- High energy and passion for WFYI Public Media mission and commitment to utilizing its public media resources to serve the community with an emphasis on equity and humanity in all activities.
- Operating with unquestionable integrity; commitment to inclusion and diversity, collaborating with each other and with community partners; respecting everyone; serving with humility; embracing change; delivering excellence every day.
- Exhibited exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Operational experience including fiscal and budgetary and reporting responsibilities.
- Experience in supervision and mentoring of professional development staff team.
Fundraising Expertise and Proven Success
- 8+ years' experience in non-profit fund development with demonstrated ability to raise significant contributed revenue. WFYI’s current budget is $15m.
- Tangible leadership experience with successful fundraising campaigns.
- Success in constructing, articulating, and implementing strategic development plans and metrics.
- Demonstrated experience with proposal development, project and budget management, and stewardship.
- Flexible, adaptive style in working with many varied audiences and strong organizational skills.
