I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
GW’s Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) works alongside our talented faculty to support cutting-edge research and scholarship across all stages of the research lifecycle. OVPR leads a number of initiatives and programs with the strategic aim of growing research capacity and boosting the impact of GW-led discovery and innovation.
This position is responsible for data management of system applications within the Office of the Vice Provost for Research. The position will focus on the day-to-day operations and data management and systems support within the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC). This position is the super-user and system administrator responsible for managing and maintaining systems to effectively serve the educational, research, and compliance missions of OVPR. This position is required to proactively interface with internal and external research clients, technical/programming colleagues (e.g., system vendors, GW IT), and 3rd party resources, when appropriate, to ensure effective definition of and delivery of business applications.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing the day-to-day operations of research administration systems, which includes:
- Serving as the primary source of technical support for all end users (OVPR and ORIC staff, ORIC committee members, researchers, faculty, administrators, and departmental and other ancillary approvers) for research administration systems, which includes providing ongoing educational outreach.
- Ensuring the definition and integrity of workflow processes, security, and permission structures for OVPR and ORIC data management systems, including grant and protocol submission and tracking systems.
- Fulfilling 24/7 on-call support duties for the research administration systems in collaboration with GW IT and vendor support teams, and responding to application/system issues as required.
- Assisting GW IT, vendors, and other GW support offices, when applicable, in performing emergency system diagnosis after failures.
- Ensuring compliance with university policies to maintain the security of applications, data, and individual client accounts.
- Being responsible for content management of the ORIC website.
- Contributing to an overall plan to organize and implement technical solutions, and issues standards for database administration concerns such as access, back-up, confidentiality, and research-related documentation.
- Performing continuous evaluation of existing research application applications and database systems to determine if future software modifications are necessary to ensure system architecture is compatible with the OVPR long-term strategic and business objectives.
- Serving as project lead/liaison with GW IT for system implementation of new applications in support of OVPR initiatives, which includes:
- Refining the business requirements for systems in collaboration with OVPR leadership and internal IT resources.
- Analyzing vendor-supplied software and helping to determine optimal configuration for interfaces between hardware and application systems.
- Obtaining the necessary content information for a project client to determine project requirements and facilitate the interchange of information.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
- PMP certification preferred.
- Two years’ experience supporting IT projects in an IT analyst role or similar function to include three years leading and facilitating IT projects and three years’ experience in clinical, business or financial operations.
- Technical skills – A strong understanding of IT, including information system architecture, security standards, programming, SQL, scripting, and access control technologies. Ability to run statistical reports and create IT policy and procedures.
- Business skills – The ability to develop and implement strategic plans to achieve organizational goals.
- People skills – Effective communication and presentation skills and the ability to build interpersonal relationships. Experience in a customer service environment.
- Critical thinking skills – Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Other skills – The ability to work independently and manage a multi-range of projects. Demonstrated ability to provide didactic presentations and training, including preparation of educational materials and direct skill development.
