Associate Medical Director

Role Summary:
The Associate Medical Director is responsible for providing medical leadership to all volunteer physicians, nurse managers, and nurse practitioners during patient sessions. In addition, the Associate Medical Director functions as part of the medical team providing service directly to BVMI patients as needed. Lastly, the Associate Medical Director may assume the responsibilities of the Medical Director in his/her absence due to vacations or other time away from the health center.
Critical Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Identifies and transmits to the Medical Director any medical practice needs or concerns.
- Works with the Medical Director to ensure the proper operation of the medical services department of the health center. Ensures that all approved medical processes and procedures at the health center are adhered to.
- Reviews electronic medical records for completeness and quality of care.
- Ensures on-call coverage for all facility operational hours to address medical questions or issues.
- Serves as the collaborating physician for all nurse practitioners with practice privileges at the BVMI Healthcare Center.
People Leadership
- Actively recruits primary care physicians and referral specialists, reviews their credentials, and provides the information to the Medical Director so that he/she can make recommendations to the Medical Services Committee.
- Assists in the evaluation of all volunteer physicians and nurse practitioners on a regular basis.
- Provides both orientation and ongoing training to physicians inclusive of the EMR system and health center protocols.
- Mentors physicians and nurse practitioners as needed.
Medical Services Management
- Provides medical care to patients weekly for a minimum of one three-hour session, and when scheduled physicians or nurse practitioners are unavailable.
- Oversees outgoing referrals; approves and monitors referrals to outside specialists and others, as necessary.
- Ensures timely review of all incoming laboratory test results for critical values and takes appropriate action, as necessary.
- Ensures timely review of all incoming diagnostic test reports, as well as incoming reports from specialists or hospitals providing a service to a BVMI patient and takes appropriate action, as necessary.
- Communicates directly with patients as needed.
- Consults on patient eligibility.
Quality Management
- Regularly measures patient satisfaction.
- Assures that the highest level of quality care is maintained.

Employment Standards:
- Maintain a current MD or DO license, including necessary CME credits. (Required)
- At least five years of experience as an internist or family practitioner.
- Experience in the direct operation of a healthcare center or medical practice.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and a high level of interpersonal skills to interact with patients, volunteers, and staff.
