Job Summary
ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. is Alaska’s largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, with approximately 1 million net undeveloped acres at year-end 2023. The company produced an average of 195 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOED) in 2023. ConocoPhillips Alaska holds major ownership interests in two of North America’s largest legacy conventional oil fields, both located on Alaska’s North Slope: Kuparuk, which the company operates, and Prudhoe Bay. Additionally, ConocoPhillips Alaska owns and operates several fields on the Western North Slope. The company also has an ownership interest in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and owns and operates the Polar Tankers fleet.
Following recent discoveries in the Brookian Topset play, ConocoPhillips plans to execute an operated drilling program to further explore and delineate the Brookian Play as well as ILX opportunities around producing assets. Near term work efforts are focused on prospect characterizations, high grading the portfolio, maturing opportunities to drill ready status, well planning and execution, and evaluating post drill results.
ConocoPhillips Alaska Exploration is currently accepting applications for an experienced Geophysicist with strong quantitative seismic analysis skills to lead and coordinate integrated subsurface evaluations, from subsurface to economic evaluation, ahead of an active rig program.
Job Description
The position will reside in the Alaska Exploration Prospect Maturation team responsible for maturing leads to drill ready prospects, and the evaluation of post drill results. The individual is expected to have strong quantitative interpretation and integration skills and will be expected to engage with the broader Alaska BU geoscience community. Responsibilities will include providing mentoring support across Exploration and Development teams.
The successful candidate will also be expected to lead/assist with joint studies and seismic projects with the Global Technical Functions and external vendors.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Generating integrated geoscience assessments of exploration opportunities, providing bid round recommendations for new acreage acquisition and performing regional scale play evaluations.
- Maturing prospects to drill ready status and supporting well planning, drilling execution and appraisal evaluation, as appropriate.
- Leading quantitative geophysical efforts in the Alaska E&A organization and partnering with geophysicists in the Alaska Development organization to facilitate effective knowledge sharing across the business unit.
- Integrating seismic and well log data to develop geophysical models that characterize the observed seismic responses and their implications for defining viable geologic scenarios.
- Interpreting quantitative geophysical attributes, including AVO and inversion products in support of Exploration and Appraisal drilling, leasing, and other activities.
- Interpretation of 2D & 3D seismic data sets; both full stack and AVO attribute volumes, and supporting creation of new attribute volumes for quantitative evaluation.
- Helping to coordinate seismic processing and re-processing efforts to help determine the phase of the seismic data and QC amplitude response and AVO compliance in preparation for quantitative analyses.
- Interacting with drillers, reservoir engineers, petrophysicists, facilities engineers, and financial analysts to properly characterize the risk, resource volumes, and economic value of exploration prospects.
- Working closely with the development and appraisal teams who manage production units and evaluation of discovered resources in the Alaska BU to integrate the exploration program with producing/discovered assets.
- Effective partnering across Geoscience and Exploration organizations with both technology experts and other exploration teams to ensure successful sharing/capture of innovative and leveraging learnings.
Basic/Required:
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
- Master’s degree or higher in Geosciences or foreign equivalent.
- 10 or more years of experience as an exploration, appraisal, or development geophysicist.
- 5 or more years of applying quantitative and interpretation geophysics as part of routine job function.
- 1 or more years of experience in identification and maturation of opportunities to drill ready status.
- Intermediate level of knowledge in rock physics.
Preferred:
- 1 or more years of experience in utilizing seismic sequence stratigraphic concepts and working with geologists to constrain geologic models for reservoir characterization with seismic data.
- Intermediate knowledge of the Alaska subsurface.
- Intermediate proficiency in prospect risking and characterizing prospects in GeoX.
- Intermediate knowledge of AASPI, GeoTeric, SeisSpace, and Paradigm/EPOS.
- Ability to integrate petrophysical log data and seismic data to develop facies models for quantification of reservoir parameters.
- Ability to work effectively with geologists, petrophysicists, geophysicists, & engineers in a team environment.
- Ability to work in data-intensive and data-poor environments.
- Demonstrated ability to use Petrel, RokDoc, Hampson-Russell, or other modeling software.
- Proven track record of effective mentoring and knowledge sharing with other geoscientists and cross disciplinary integration skills.
