Department Summary:
MITRE’s Software Engineering Innovation Center is one of the government’s largest resources dedicated entirely to software engineering; delivering capabilities that modernize legacy systems, that prototype ways to address unmet mission needs, and that deliver advanced functionality pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Each of MITRE’s R&D centers utilize our skills and expertise to address today’s cross-cutting technology challenges in domains like agile development, mobile computing, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, human-machine teaming, user experience, virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, decentralization and more. The Software Solutions and Technology department within the SEIC delivers healthy software solutions that enable local, national, and global missions and innovations.
Roles and Responsibilities:
As a Principal Cloud Engineer, you’ll be applying your hands-on expertise to the design, security, architecture, networking, governance, and automation of cloud platforms, leading and shaping cloud projects, including advising the government on if and how to adopt cloud on a large scale, and leading projects that architect, implement, and operate secure systems in the cloud.
Some examples of what you can expect in the role include:
- Leading development of a scalable and resilient cloud environment that allows your sponsor to securely interact with your team’s solutions.
- Collaborating with our Information Security team to define and meet multi-cloud security baselines.
- Acting as the primary point of contact between MITRE and the sponsor to represent the work of the team you manage and cultivate a trusted advisor relationship.
- Recognizing opportunities to minimize duplication of effort by offering your expertise to other MITRE projects looking to implement cross-domain, multi-cloud, or hybrid cloud solutions.
- Writing code to automate the provisioning of cloud resources in a multi-cloud environment.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Candidates require at least 5 years of cloud leadership experience including planning, organizing, staffing, and executing development projects of at least 5 staff and cloud development experience leveraging Agile DevSecOps methodologies.
- Candidates must have related secondary skills and experience in data, AI, cybersecurity, Agile, DevSecOps or other related areas in the cloud, including both the underlying technologies and the cloud native services that can provide them. Candidates must also have experience with organizational change, acquisition, and/or policy governance and oversight leadership or coordination in cloud adoption/migration.
- Candidates must have a history of strong verbal and written communication through things like code, interfaces, pull-request discussions, documentation, proposals, and presentations.
- Ability to obtain a US Government issued security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some sponsors will require a higher level of trust to work with their data. A pre-existing Secret or Top-Secret clearance is preferred.
- Some other skills or qualifications-of-interest successful candidates might have:
- At least 3 years of experience in a programming language like JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, Go, etc.
- Experience securing systems to compliance standards (e.g., NIST 800-171, NIST 800-53)
- Experience using cloud automation tools, such as Terraform, AWS CDK, etc.
- Experience with DevOps and CI/CD automated build and deploy processes using tools like GitLab’s CI/CD capability.
- Experience administering systems, networks, or databases.
- Experience utilizing modern systems engineering, mission engineering, or system of systems engineering methods.
- Cloud certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AZ-305, etc.
- Experience with developing and deploying container-based solutions including Docker containers and container-orchestration solutions (Kubernetes or OpenShift).
- Experience with using the distributed version control system, Git.
