WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, has an opening in its Walnut Creek office for a Manager of Business Intelligence and Analytics. This individual will report to the Vice President of Analytics and is part of the team responsible for providing Data Engineering, Business Intelligence and Analytics, and Machine Learning and Modeling to the organization. This individual will manage a small team of BI Analysts, designing and executing development and modification of new and existing reports, and delivering custom analysis requested by the business. Additionally, this individual will serve as the outward-facing liaison for the entire team for planning, solution architecture, and project prioritization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP: Develop and implement the business intelligence and overall analytics team strategy aligned with organizational goals. Collaborate with Senior Leadership to understand business needs and identify opportunities for data-driven improvements. Create and maintain a roadmap for BI, Analytics, Data Engineering, and Machine Learning initiatives ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- TEAM MANAGEMENT: Lead, mentor, and manage a team of BI Analysts, providing guidance and support to foster professional growth. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the BI team, ensuring efficient workflow and timely delivery of insights.
- HANDS-ON DATA ANALYSIS AND REPORTING: Perform as a player-coach, participating in project work and analytics. Design, develop and maintain comprehensive dashboards, reports, and visualizations to support decision-making processes. Conduct advanced data analysis to uncover trends, patterns, and actionable insights. Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and consistency across all BI tools and reports.
- STAKEHOLDER COLLABORATION: Work closely with business units to understand their data needs and provide tailored solutions. Maintain list of priorities and coordinate regular meetings with key teams in the business. Communicate findings and insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Manage BI projects from inception to completion, including scope, timelines/milestones, and resource allocation. Ensure projects are delivered on time and meet defined objectives and quality standards. Serve as a project manager for broader initiatives within the Analytics team.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field required.
- EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 5 years prior experience in Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, or related field required, with a demonstratable track record of managing multiple projects and delivering results. Experience in a supervisory or team lead role overseeing BI Analysts or data professionals strongly preferred. Experience working for an insurance company, preferable within workers compensation, strongly preferred. Actuarial experience (or experience working closely with Actuaries) preferred. Experience with programming languages required (e.g., Python or similar). Experience with source control processes required. Demonstrated experience in data modeling, data warehousing, and advanced analytics required.
- TECHNICAL SKILLS: Strong proficiency in BI tools (e.g., Power BI or similar) and data manipulation languages (e.g., SQL, preferably on a postgres-based platform like Snowflake). Moderate-to-Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel required (VBA, Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts, Power Query, Power Pivot).
- Ability to communicate complex data insights effectively to stakeholders, executives, and other analysts required.
- Occasional travel to our corporate offices or offsite meetings required.

$133,500 - $180,620 a year
This pay scale is an estimate of the salary range the employer reasonably expects to pay for the position based on potential employee qualifications, operational needs and other considerations consistent with applicable law. The actual salary may be above or below the range. The pay scale applies only to this position and only if it is filled in Walnut Creek, California. The pay scale may be different for other positions or in other locations.
