The Optum Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs department is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join its Legal Team to provide support to the Optum Behavioral Care business.
The candidate will become part of an innovative and experienced team of attorneys and legal professionals that operate in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must be able to prioritize multiple competing priorities, communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and matrix partners, and have a desire to develop a deep knowledge of the Optum Behavioral Care business and operations.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Draft and review various types of contracts, policies, playbooks, letters, and other documents related to the provision of health care services
- Review, interpret, and provide legal advice on various applicable laws and regulations
- Perform legal research
- Review and approve external communications and materials
- Collaborate with and advise clinicians, clinical business leaders, and matrixed partners in the defense and management of subpoenas, regulatory complaints, as well as patient and provider complaints
- Provide pre-litigation support as well as partner with the internal litigation team on ongoing litigation
- Participate in/ help to initiate process-improvement initiatives in collaboration with Operations, Finance, Clinical, Compliance, Privacy and other matrixed partners
- Assess legal risks and work with business and operational teams to mitigate and address such risks
- Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and our businesses

Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree and licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- 5+ years of progressive experience with a law firm and/or an in-house legal department
- Working understanding of health care laws - False Claims Act, state and federal anti-kickback laws, Physician Self-Referral Law (Stark), corporate practice of medicine laws, Civil Monetary Penalties law, and HIPAA
- Proven analytical skills and strategic decision-making ability
- Proven outstanding written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to issue spot, multi-task, and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to collaborate as well as efficiently and effectively work independently
Preferred Qualifications:
- Behavioral health experience
- In-house experience in the health care industry
- Experience drafting and reviewing professional services agreements
- Experience navigating a large and complex organization
- Basic health care billing and coding knowledge - especially in the behavioral health area
- Working knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and/or TRICARE regulations
- Familiarity with facility and professional licensing statutes and regulations

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
