ResponsibilitiesJOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE
The Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for utilizing training and skills to provide direct outpatient care under the
supervision of a physician. The neurosurgery physician assistant is qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat
neurological/neurosurgical disorders. The PA’s primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing clinic
consultations for pre-operative, post-operative and non-operative neurosurgical patient.
ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Obtain medical histories when necessary.
2. Perform physical exams (within established protocol).
3. Diagnose, treat and monitor acute and chronic diseases (within protocol guidelines).
4. Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
5. Prescribe or recommend medications for prescription for medications and treatment (within
protocol guidelines).
6. Responds to emergency situations in an appropriate manner.
7. Promote positive lifestyle habits to all patients through education and counseling.
8. Assure the supervising physician reviews and signs off 20% of charts.
9. Maintain patient’s privacy and confidentiality.
10. Work closely with other nurses to assure patient flow is efficient.
11. Consult with the supervising doctor regarding patient symptoms to assure proper diagnosis and
plan of treatment.
12. Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
13. Responds to patient telephone calls (within clinic protocol timeframe)
14. Adjudicates incoming referrals (within clinic protocol)
15. Communicates with referring providers, as necessary
16. Reviews diagnostic testing results such as labs and imaging reports (within clinic protocol
timeframe)
17. Completes paperwork such as FMLA and disability requests (within clinic protocol timeframe)
18. Oversees clinical data collection (ie for quality improvement or database reporting)
19. Conducts relevant research.
20. Participate in quality improvement.
21. Attends meetings as requested.
22. Performs other duties as assigned
QualificationsRequired Education:
Graduate of a Physician Assistant training Program
Required Licensure and Certifications:
State PA License required, BLS
PREFERRED Qualifications:
Two years experience as a full-time Physician Assistant, preferably in
outpatient neurosurgery
