The Alternatives Advisory Practice sits within Northern Trust Asset Management and works closely with Northern’s $140B Global Family Office practice to provide customized Private Investments and Hedge Fund solutions. The team collaborates on investment and operational diligence with 50 South Capital, a boutique alternatives provider within Northern Trust that has over $14.1 billion in assets.
The Alternatives Advisory Practice is seeking to add a professional in the Chicago headquarters to be part of a team that will review, analyze, and source investments across the alternatives space. This includes Private Investments (buyout, growth equity, venture capital, private credit) and Hedge Funds in both in US and Europe. In addition, this individual would be responsible for monitoring legacy portfolios, structuring and implementing bespoke alternatives portfolios for clients. This individual would also be responsible for assisting in new business efforts, portfolio monitoring, and other special projects.
The key responsibilities of this role include:
Analyzing potential private fund investment opportunities (buyout/growth, venture, credit, real assets) and hedge funds; this includes evaluating track records, strategies, and teams, and making a recommendation on whether clients should invest.
Identifying and cultivating relationships with fund managers in the U.S. and Europe in order to position Northern Trust for investment; this potentially involves travel primarily within the US, and to a lesser extent certain European countries.
Conducting general research across private markets, identifying trends, and developing investment theses.
Monitoring the existing fund portfolios and developing insights into fund performance.
Collaborating in client servicing efforts, portfolio implementation, and strategy development.
Assisting with special projects as needed, such as writing industry white papers and compiling ad hoc reports.
Qualifications:
Strong analytical and judgment skills with ability to assess both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of an investment.
Ability to represent the group before investors, other LPs, fund managers, placement agents, attorneys and leverage providers.
Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work in a collegial, team-oriented environment.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
High attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
Knowledge about the private investments industry (as well as hedge funds), deal structures, and various participants in the private credit ecosystem.
Understanding of private fund investments (as well as hedge funds), portfolio construction and fund leverage/cash management.
Intellectual curious and humble approach to investing.
Highly proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Experience:
Undergraduate degree required, MBA highly preferred.
5-10 years of work experience, preferably in private equity, private credit/lending, investment banking, consulting or other alternatives asset management; direct principal investing experience a plus.
