Summary:
Part of a central team that collaboratively works with Field Function Leadership and Law, Compliance, Security, Strategic Communications and Internal Audit. Engages with Performance Team Leaders, Field Talent leaders and Field Leaders to provide strategic, trusted consultation and thought leadership on field member matters to maintain positive and effective independent contractor and employment relationships throughout the Northwestern Mutual field. In addition, focus on a variety of field relations issues, including advising on Northwestern Mutual’s policies, practices, how to address workplace issues, performance management, and coaching/development related to creating a positive workplace culture.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Leads Field Relations strategy, investigations, reporting, and management.
- Leads investigations and partners with other teams to ensure that investigations/disciplinary processes are handled in a fair, timely manner including assessing and documenting best practices for investigations.
- Leads a team that develops and implements training, tools, systems, protocols and templates for Field Relations, Performance Teams and Field Function Leadership to facilitate effective execution of field relations strategies and practices across the organization.
- Works in partnership with the Field Leader Development team to ensure leader training, curriculum and programming reflects the strategies, philosophies and best practices for field culture, behavior and conduct.
- Using knowledge of applicable employment laws as well as internal policies and practices; leads a variety of strategic projects related to Field Relations that impact enterprise-wide philosophy and/or policy.
- Leads field relations matters including investigations to deliver fair outcomes in collaboration with Regional Vice Presidents, in consultation with the VP-Field Talent, VP-Field D&I and SD, Field Leader Development.
- Serves as a subject matter expert and advisor to Regional Vice Presidents and Field Function Leadership on field relations matters, including preparing briefing documents.
- Works collaboratively across the Field Talent Department and Field Performance Department to ensure all aspects of field relations matters are delivered effectively to the business.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 8 years of human resources experience including a bachelor’s degree in HR or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible work experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including influence and persuasion are required.
- Must be able to handle conflict situations with senior leaders.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of human resources management and employee relations required; experience working in a franchise model is preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills required.
- Demonstrated expertise in harassment, discrimination, and retaliation investigations.
- Models courageous and constructive dialogue, confidence to offer new and potentially challenging ideas to foster conversation and critical thinking, ability to deliver difficult / complex messages and help others understand multiple points of view to drive outcomes.
- Proven track record in demonstrating the ability to independently set priorities and carry out multiple, diverse assignments within time deadlines required.
- Superior oral and written communications skills, including the ability to write contractual language, letters of agreement, etc.
- Ability to prepare executive summaries.
- Exceptional ability to influence, negotiate and lead at peer level and above across multiple organizations.
- Flexibility and the ability to creatively respond to changing conditions required.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate and respond quickly, adjusts to competing priorities, comfortable operating through risk and uncertainty in a high-volume work environment.
- Excellent consultative, interpersonal/influencing skills, including the ability to build trusted advisor relationships across the organization.
- Strong analytical and data skills
Pay Range - Start: $110,040.00
Pay Range - End: $204,360.00
Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
