Director, Downstream Processing (DSP) and Scale-Up
About us
EVERY is a leading VC-backed food tech ingredient company and market leader using precision fermentation to create animal proteins without the animal for the global food and beverage industry. EVERY is a team of passionate change-makers who are reimagining the factory farm model with a kinder, more sustainable alternative. Leveraging precision fermentation to produce hyper-functional and one-to-one replacement proteins from microorganisms, EVERY is on a mission to decouple the world’s proteins from the animals that make them. We are a passionate, determined (and fun!) team with a vital objective, and we're on the lookout for like-minded people to join our mission. For more information, visit www.every.com.
The Role:
As an essential member of EVERY’s production team, you will drive the transition of our technology from pilot scale to full-scale manufacturing, ensuring the seamless scale-up of downstream processing (DSP) operations. This role requires extensive DSP experience and hands-on involvement at the manufacturing plant, optimizing production processes and ensuring product quality. You will also be responsible for developing and growing the DSP team to support scale-up activities in-house and at contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs).
What you’ll accomplish:
- Lead the scale-up of DSP operations from pilot scale to full-scale manufacturing.
- Develop and implement strategies for efficient and cost-effective production.
- Collaborate closely with CMOs and Contract Development and Manufacturing Organizations (CDMOs) to ensure smooth technology transfer and scaling processes.
- Establish and maintain robust processes to ensure product quality and consistency.
- Ensure reliable production of protein with MVP processes, fully integrating the DSP team into scale-up and scale-down teams.
- Build sufficient scale-up and down models to allow seamless transfer of processes to industrial production scale.
Downstream Processing Expertise:
- Serve as the domain expert for DSP, providing technical guidance and hands-on support to optimize processes.
- Oversee DSP operations, including purification, filtration, centrifugation, and other relevant processes.
- Monitor and tweak processes in real-time to address any issues and optimize production outcomes.
- Collaborate with upstream processing (USP) teams to ensure seamless integration of DSP operations.
- Simplify DSP processes to make them robust and cost-efficient.
- Increase protein recovery rates, reduce losses, waste, and utility usage.
Team Development:
- Develop and grow a DSP team capable of supporting scale-up activities in-house and at CMOs/CDMOs.
- Foster a collaborative environment to ensure team alignment with scale-up and scale-down teams.
- Develop required tech transfer documents and educate internal and external team members on using existing and novel equipment.
- Drive the commercialization process, ensuring that scale-up activities align with commercial goals.
- Develop and manage timelines, budgets, and resources to meet commercialization targets.
- Provide technical support for regulatory submissions and compliance.
- Support engineers in designing future facilities and identify state-of-the-art equipment to achieve high product quality at low costs.
- Be actively involved at the manufacturing plant, working closely with plant operators and engineers.
- Conduct troubleshooting and problem-solving activities to resolve production issues.
- Ensure adherence to safety and quality standards in all plant operations.
What you bring (required):
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in downstream processing and scale-up in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or food tech industries.
- Ability to travel to our CMOs and represent EVERY as a DSP expert.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, biotechnology, or a related field.
- Proven track record of successfully scaling up DSP operations from pilot to full-scale manufacturing.
- Extensive experience with CMOs.
- Deep understanding of DSP technologies and processes, including purification, filtration, and centrifugation.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make real-time adjustments to processes.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work hands-on at the manufacturing plant and collaborate effectively with plant operators and engineers.
Nice-to-have (but not required):
- Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field.
- Experience in the food industry.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance in the biotechnology or food tech industries.
