THE OPPORTUNITY
Providence, one of the nation's largest healthcare providers with 52 acute care hospitals in seven states and annual revenues of $25 billion, is seeking an experienced and progressive physician leader with demonstrated leadership capacity leading the pursuit of delivering quality care when such care is initiated in or delivered predominantly within the ambulatory care ministry. The chief medical officer (CMO) is to evaluate and help create a culture of continuous improvement to achieve superior outcomes in the delivery of clinical services under Physician Clinical Network (PCN). The executive provides vision and leadership using clinical, organizational, interpersonal, and management skills, to build alignment and integration amongst the physicians and providers from all regions with the goal of creating and scaling a unified clinical and organizational voice. Working within a dyad leadership structure the Chief Medical Officer has responsibility for the PCN's clinical quality, clinical operations, physician practice issues, and promoting collaboration and alignment amongst the various Providence Employed and Foundation medical groups. Through the development of successful performance improvement plans, standards, and practices, the Chief Medical Officer is responsible for achieving the goals, objectives and long-term strategic plans of physicians and providers in the System. In partnership with the Chief Executive, Physician Enterprise (PE) the CMO will help establish governance structures that lead to high performing groups across the regions. This position will have oversite in WA, OR, CA, MT, NM, TX & AK.
Hybrid role with preferred location in one of the following: Seattle, WA - Irvine, CA - Portland, OR
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain high level of leadership visibility in each of the regional medical groups. Connect provider engagement strategies across regions to ensure ongoing progress is being made to improve the Joy of Practice for our providers and there is alignment of providers with key Providence initiatives.
- Bring Innovative Care Team Models, as well as new workflows and new technology into the Medical Group to help drive better performance.
- Drive Operating Commitments (Quality, Patient Experience, Provider Engagement, Productivity, Risk Based Performance).
- Drive Value Based Contract Performance utilizing tools that help us understand total cost of care (VOA and Roadmap) including establishing a structure to drive behavior change.
- Partner with CEO to evaluate governance structures for medical groups, enhancing accountability and performance ownership within the groups. Provide region by region support into developing affiliated networks of independent Providers that we contract with to provide population health services and risk-based contracts.
- Ensure adequate Peer Review structures and processes are in place to drive quality beyond clinical care metrics.
- Partner with PS&D to manage recruitment strategies, connection to GME pipeline of new physicians, build capacity to offer internal locums support to the medical group practices.
- Partner with Human Resources and Benefit Trust to modernize benefit, disability, employee assistance and retirement options that keep the medical group market competitive.
- Partner with Operations to help lead redesign of workflows aligning EPIC deployment and standardizing practices, to ensure all caregivers can work at the top of their license.
- Help lead financial performance improvement initiatives (examples: PCP breakeven on contribution margin basis, reducing Hospitalist sponsorship costs).
- Partner with Clinical Institutes to ensure medical group specialist are high performing within the institute goals.
- Partner with Operations to drive improved access and navigation of our medical office experience and physician availability.
- Provide a key clinical voice to system strategic decisions and participate as a physician enterprise representative in Clinical Council and other leadership forums.
- Accountability from a goal setting perspective of CMO's in the medical groups across the system.
- Serves as a role model for effective relationship building.
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
The CMO must be a licensed MD or DO with an ability to obtain a license to practice Medicine in the United States (required). At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience and responsibilities in a health system is required with an emphasis on standardization and implementation of innovative care models, practice transformation, highly reliable clinical quality, and patient and employee safety. At least five years of experience as a leading executive in a large complex operation (region or system) is essential.

- A broad knowledge and understanding of health care trends, reforms, and their implications; provides guidance and advice on a local and national level on health care reform legislation.
