The Director of Data Engineering is a seasoned engineering leader who has previously managed teams of data engineers, developed existing talent and hired new talent into the team. The ideal candidate prioritizes well, communicates clearly, and understands how to drive a high level of excellence across the team.
The Director of Data Engineering has a proven track record of efficient and high quality delivery, rigorous testing, deep monitoring, and experience with large scale data application deployments in cloud environments. The business operates at a very large data scale and on critical customer workloads, therefore a discipline around operational excellence is essential.
The data team includes engineers and architects that deliver solutions that support both internal and external customers. The Director of Data Engineering is responsible for building data applications in a fast-paced engineering environment that values high-quality software design and rapid iteration.
In this role, you’ll get to:
- Ideate. Identify areas of improvement in our existing frameworks, tools, and processes and deploy processes to make them better. Keep up to date with technical skills to contribute meaningfully to architecture discussions.
- Innovate. Help innovate and invent new value-added data solutions, driving them to fruition through technical project management skills to deliver product roadmap items.
- Production. Enjoy building large scale distributed data solutions (multi-instance or multi-tenant) that enables all downstream mission critical workloads to function without interruption.
- Interact. Work with Deepwatch’s internal stakeholders to define business and functional requirements and deliver robust, scalable, operable solutions.
- Problem Solve. Run a tight, lean, and efficient operation, breaking down roadblocks, and measuring success along the way. Leverage metrics, monitoring and alarming to measure and improve the operational processes and performance of the team.
- Lead. Enjoy being a people manager that builds, motivates and mentors data engineers and architects. You should have a proven track record in recruiting and retaining top talent, with strong day-to-day people and performance management tasks.
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to demonstrate:
- 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering large-scale data engineering solutions
- 5+ years of data engineering team management experience
- Experience designing and developing large scale, high-traffic applications
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment
- Experience with multi-instance or multi-tenant architectures
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Passion for responsibly defining, designing, and managing development of data platforms
- Ability to engage with other internal communities on issues of data security, safety, and privacy
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to relay complex concepts effectively to internal executive stakeholders
- Ability to deliver in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and multiple stakeholders distributed across product, engineering and science teams.
- Expertise deploying data solutions on AWS
- Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence

Statutory Pay Disclosure:
For applicants in NYC, CO, CA, RI, and WA, the salary range for this role is $200,000 to $250,000 + stock options + benefits. Actual compensation may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level.
