Departmental Overview
Launched in 2022 the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and Environment (DSE) at Berkeley is a partnership between UC Berkeley's Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), with the financial support of Eric and Wendy Schmidt. The Center combines the power of computing and environmental science with open science principles and a commitment to inclusivity - all towards the purpose of building tangible, replicable, and accessible solutions to problems compromising the health of our environment.
Position Summary
The Scientific Software Developer will play a critical role working to design and build geospatial applications in the Jupyter software ecosystem. The incumbent will be a seasoned software developer with interest and experience in developing open source mapping applications.

Responsibilities
- Applies advanced software experience and understanding to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy and evaluate open-source software for Jupyter, this includes:
- Working with a team of collaborators to envision Jupyter based open source software prototypes that address spatial questions.
- Iteratively developing those prototypes with stakeholder feedback.
- Publishing and sharing the prototypes with potential users.
- Understands and applies industry practices, open-source community standards and department policies and procedures in depth.
- May serve as technical lead for multiple software development projects of moderate to broad scope.
- Specifies, develops and executes complex test plans.
- Determines source code control techniques and configuration management design and changes.
- Initiates and oversees changes in development, maintenance and system standards.
- Sets the technical requirements for complex software specifications.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of open-source software development.
- Highly advanced skills associated with software specification, design, modification, implementation and deployment of large-scale scope.
- Excellent project leadership and management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs.
- Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
- Advanced experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
- Advanced experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
- Demonstrated software repository skills.
- Experience developing and executing complex test plans.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
- Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
- Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience and interest in GIS and geospatial mapping applications.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,300.00 - $128,000.00.
