Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering USA, the Director of Software Engineering will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Topcon's software products. This is an exceptional opportunity for a visionary leader to drive innovation and excellence in a collaborative, cutting-edge environment. You will be responsible for managing specific software teams, including direct reports to leaders such as Scrum Masters, Architects, and Product Owners. This role will be based at Topcon's THINC headquarters in San Diego and may involve managing bespoke remote teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, develop, and mentor a high-functioning, highly productive, agile, inclusive, motivated, and distributed engineering organization of experienced engineers.
- Ensure timely and efficient development processes are implemented and maintained across all software teams.
- Provide weekly reports to the Senior Director for Engineering on business trajectory, culture, and efficiency.
- Make and own critical decisions, proactively foreseeing and resolving issues.
- Drive and communicate technical strategy across all levels of the organization.
- Deep dive technically where needed while maintaining a broad perspective.
- Partner with and support the product planning and product management teams with insight into commercially viable technical architecture, guidance on timelines and capabilities, weaknesses and strengths.
- Model a culture of innovation and collaboration while prioritizing business value-based market feedback from our sales, marketing, and clinical organizations.
- Ability to delegate while remaining accountable for outcomes, both short and long term.
- Actively develop the current team and recruit diverse high performers who deliver high-quality work and inspire others to do the same. Foster a culture of technical excellence and service ownership.
- Monitor and track platform performance to ensure response time and capacity metrics are within desired ranges.
- Ensure that all projects meet the expected deadline for release, with quality and regulation needs being met each and every time.
- Ensure inclusion into all aspects of software development, including stage updates to stakeholders, sales team leaders and service delivery.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role, managing an agile, fast paced software development team.
- Degree in computer science would be advantageous.
- We also welcome applications from home grown, self-taught individuals who show the right stuff to lead and develop a market leading organization and have the required experience in leading agile software teams.
- Strong knowledge of agile processes, including Scrum, Kanban, and Lean.
- Strong leadership characteristics with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
- Experience in DICOM, PACS, HL7, and FHIR standards would be advantageous.
- Experience in medical modalities such as OCT, Visual Field, Refraction would be advantageous.
- Experience in medical image processing is highly advantageous.
- Solid knowledge of medical software regulatory paths, responsibilities, documentation, and reporting processes.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- A proactive and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving.

Base Pay:
Expected Base Pay Range: $180,000 to $200,000 Annualized. The base pay range included is a projected hiring range for a position, level and potential work location(s) listed. Topcon provides the compensation range that it in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position. This compensation range is based on a full-time schedule.
Bonus eligible:
In addition to base pay, compensation for this position includes eligibility for a 20% annual bonus.
