DESCRIPTION
Under supervision of the Ships IT Systems Lead, this position is responsible for managing cyberinfrastructure on the ships in the Scripps oceanographic research fleet. The Ships IT Systems Analyst also provides architecture design input and makes implementation decisions that promote a shared cyberinfrastructure blueprint across the entire fleet. While the position is primarily responsible for one ship, the incumbent also assists when needed on the other ships to ensure operational goals are met.
In collaboration with Scripps IT and SOMTS staff, the Ships IT Systems Analyst follows defined procedures to analyze and resolve complex IT issues on the ship in a number of technical areas:
- Installation and administration of VMware, Windows and Linux servers.
- Management of storage, web, collaboration and printing services.
- Integration of user accounts and provisioning of virtual desktop environments.
- Installation and configuration of network and firewall devices.
- Monitoring of cybersecurity alerts and audit logs.
- Maintenance of required compliance records for ship inspections by federal agencies.
- Tier 2 IT/OT endpoint support to assist Shipboard Technical Support and the Electro-Technical Officer.
The Ships IT System Analyst typically works from shore but needs to travel to the ship several times each year to install, troubleshoot and maintain critical cyberinfrastructure equipment. The total travel time each year will vary from one to three months depending on shipyard, inspection and maintenance schedules.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related scientific field and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Broad knowledge of various areas of IT. Knowledge of hypervisor clustering platforms such as VMware vSphere to run virtual Windows and Linux servers in support of a diverse userbase.
- Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
- Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis. Demonstrated ability to install, troubleshoot and administer Windows, macOS and Linux computers. Demonstrated ability to install, configure and manage typical services such as SMB, NFS, HTTP, SSH, RDP, SNMP and LPD.
- Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications. Demonstrated ability to write automation scripts using general purpose scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Powershell, or Linux shell scripts. Familiarity with source code revision tools such as Git.
- Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks. Knowledge of common intrusion detection and prevention tools at the network and host layers. Familiarity with GPOs, Intune or other MDM platforms to configure and monitor security settings.
- Thorough knowledge of IP-based networking (TCP, UDP, ICMP). Knowledge of switch, router and firewall management using CIDR and VLAN configurations. Familiarity with VPN tunneling at the host and network levels. Knowledge of network troubleshooting tools such as ping and traceroute, and network activity monitoring tools such as Intermapper and Wireshark.
- Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases. Familiarity with high-volume data logging, aggregation and reporting tools such as Splunk.
