Job Summary

Our vision is that every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science. We believe computer science should be part of the core curriculum, alongside other courses such as mathematics, biology, chemistry, or algebra!
Duties And Responsibilities
As a Director of Engineering at Code.org, you’ll be responsible for:
- Reporting to the CTO and leading three engineering teams (3 engineering managers and approx. 20 engineers) responsible for our student and teacher-facing products.
- Working closely with our product and curriculum teams to execute on our roadmap.
- Understanding the business needs across the organization to evaluate engineering resources and capacity, providing recommendations, and making tradeoffs, as needed.
- Ensuring correct architecture and code quality of our products, working closely with engineers to make day-to-day technical decisions and tradeoffs.
- Creating sustainable software, balancing feature delivery and timelines, and delivering excellent live site availability for our millions of students and teachers around the world.
- Supporting the career development and growth of engineering managers and engineers across the student and teacher teams.
- Working with the engineering managers to support hiring, retention, employee engagement, and performance management.
- Representing the student and teacher-facing engineering teams as a member of our leadership team. Working with peers in leadership positions at Code.org to foster a healthy, engaged, and diverse culture at Code.org.
Experience & Qualifications
We seek candidates who have:
- Passion for our mission of growing access to computer science education
- Experience in people management, having led multiple teams of software engineers (manager of managers) with demonstrated success of delivering products
- Proven ability to guide the planning and execution of software projects, balance trade-offs, and deliver on schedule
- Relevant professional software engineering experience to provide technical mentoring, design, and architectural guidance to team members
- Demonstrated experience in hiring, building, and developing diverse teams of software engineers
- Experience supporting a production high-scale web-based software product or service
- Experience in one or more of these technologies preferred: JavaScript, React, Ruby on Rails, SQL/Databases/MySQL, AWS
In Addition, Candidates Must
- Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Pass a pre-employment background check
- Be willing to travel a minimum of two times per year for team events

Compensation & Benefits Package
The expected salary range for this position is $194,000 - $216,000. The actual offer will be at the company’s sole discretion and determined by relevant business considerations, including the final candidate’s qualifications, years of experience, and skillset.
