Chestnut Carbon provides access to carbon markets for private US forest owners in exchange for their long-term commitment to conserving their forestland through its Forest Carbon Works program. Chestnut Carbon also plants and restores native forests on its own lands and third-party lands using carbon markets. As the Senior Biometrician of a nature-based solutions company committed to developing high-quality voluntary carbon offset projects, you will play a key role in designing and implementing forest inventories, monitoring programs, growth-and-yield projections and statistical analyses of inventory data. The position reports to the Vice President of Product Development and works closely with the entire Product Team to ensure the highest standards are met. Preference is for the Biometrician to be based in Minneapolis, but not a requirement.

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree or a Ph.D. in applied statistics, biometrics or forest mensuration. The ideal candidate will be proficient in in statistical modeling, finite sampling methods, estimation, the use of FVS (Forest Vegetation Simulator) and multiple computer programming languages. No prior carbon-project experience is required.

Responsibilities:

Forest Inventory Design: Collaborate with forestry professionals and stakeholders to design comprehensive forest inventory and monitoring programs, including plot design, sampling strategies, and data collection protocols.
Statistical Analysis and Modelling: Utilize FVS and advanced statistical techniques and modeling approaches to analyze forest inventory data, including stand structure, tree growth, biomass estimation, and spatial distribution patterns.
Model Development: Develop and implement and maintain statistical models to predict and simulate forest dynamics, including growth and yield models, species distribution models, and carbon sequestration models.
Research and Innovation: Stay abreast of emerging trends and advancements in forest biometrics, and quantitative methods, contributing to the development and adoption of innovative approaches within the organization.
Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of foresters, ecologists, GIS specialists, and stakeholders to integrate biometric analyses into broader forest management and conservation initiatives.
Training and Capacity Building: Provide training and mentorship to junior staff members, technicians, and field crews on forest inventory methods, statistical analysis techniques, and software tools.

About You:

Master’s degree or Ph.D. in applied statistics, biometrics or forest mensuration .
Experience with forest growth-and-yield modeling, including individual tree growth models, stand-level growth projections, and forest inventory systems.
Knowledge of spatial analysis techniques and GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for analyzing and visualizing spatial data in a forest context.
Familiarity with forest landscape modeling approaches, such as spatially explicit simulation models and landscape-scale assessments of forest dynamics and ecosystem services.
Previous experience in applying biometric methods to address specific forestry challenges, such as timber inventory estimation, wildlife habitat modeling, or ecosystem restoration planning.
Proficiency in statistical programming languages (e.g., R, C#, Python) and software (e.g., SAS, JMP, STATA, VBA) for data analysis and modeling. Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including expertise in biometric methods, multivariate analysis, survey sampling and spatial statistics.
Deep understanding of forest ecology, silviculture principles, and forest management practices, with the ability to translate biometric analyses into actionable insights for forest management decision-making. Experience with FVS (Forest Vegetation Simulator).
Strong technical writing skills.
Strong communication skills, including both oral and written.
Strong organizational and planning skills, as well as a high-level attention to detail.
Strong time-management and self-management skills and can take direction and work independently to reach identified goals on a set timeline.
Can maintain a high level of professionalism and discretion in dealing with highly sensitive project deliverables.
Experience with MS Office; and familiarity with spreadsheets.
Have a commitment to solving the environmental challenges of our time.
Willingness to travel domestically (limited).
Able to work effectively with remote team members throughout the U.S.

Salary and Benefits:

The base salary range for this position is subject to the chosen candidate’s experience, skills, certifications and qualifications, determination of which is made in the sole discretion of Chestnut Carbon.

All employees are eligible to participate in health, insurance, and 401K plan benefits on their first day of employment. Chestnut Carbon pays 100% of the cost of the employees’ health/dental/vision insurance. During each fiscal year of employment, employees will be eligible to earn a discretionary annual incentive bonus, based on company and individual performance targets.
