Job Overview (What You’ll Do):
Cotopaxi is seeking a Controller to be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy of financial records, and leading the month-end close process. This position will manage key functions such as billing, accounts receivable/payable, general ledger maintenance, and financial reporting, while ensuring compliance with GAAP standards. The Controller plays a critical role in preparing for audits, managing tax compliance, and working on budgeting and forecasting processes. They will collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to maintain strong financial controls and provide strategic financial insights to support decision-making. Strong leadership, a CPA certification, and advanced knowledge of accounting systems are essential for success in this role.
Job Responsibilities (How You’ll Do It):
- Consistently generate financial books and records with the highest level of integrity and accuracy, while continuously working to reduce latency.
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting tasks and operations, including but not limited to - billings, AR/AP management, GL mapping, new customer and vendor set-up, lender reporting, and banking activities.
- Manage the month-end closing process, providing direction and guidance to internal and external stakeholders, with the goal of delivering financials within ten days of month-end.
- Execute and review the recording of revenue and expenses, GL account reconciliations, preparation and maintenance and balance sheet schedules, etc. to ensure accurate and consistent treatment of all transactions and entries.
- Identify, implement, and maintain effective accounting policies, procedures, controls, and practices in adherence with GAAP/PCAOB standards.
- Prepare and lead the company through external financial audits, thoroughly understanding how the results and conclusions impact the business.
- Work with tax firms to manage federal, state, and local government regulatory and compliance, tax preparation, reporting, and filing requirements.
- Assist with the preparation of forecasts, annual budgets, and long-range plans.
- Lead the financial preparation of regulatory filings and registrations related to securities offerings and capital raises.
- Ensure company compliance and good standing on all business licenses and permits.
- Support the CFO on other matters, including payroll, benefits administration, 401(k) insurance and risk management, and evaluation and implementation of financial technology and systems.
- Assist with board material preparation, communication, and ad hoc analysis.
The Ideal Candidate (What You Need to Succeed):
- 10+ years of experience in full-cycle accounting.
- 3-5 years in a Controller or similar leadership position.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent related experience. A Master's Degree in Accounting is preferred.
- CPA certification required. (Top 15 accounting firm experience is a plus.)
- Significant experience managing inventory and COGS.
- CPG and omni-channel (DTC, Retail, B2B, AMZN) experience preferred.
- Advanced understanding of GAAP standards.
- Advanced NetSuite experience required.
- Experience using Bill.com and Shopify is a plus.
- High-level of organization and attention-to-detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders with executive-level presence.
