POSITION SUMMARY:
The Infection Preventionist develops and maintains an organization-wide clinical risk management program and coordinates resources for all phases of infection control. This position may require a varied work schedule as well as frequent travel between Community Medical Centers sites. The Clinical Risk and Infection Control Nurse reports to the Chief Nursing Officer.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
PROGRAMMATIC
- Develops, revises and implements infection control policies and programs based on IMQ, OSHA, CDC, CDPH and APIC regulations and guidelines in collaboration with key stakeholders.
- Represents the organization as the Infection Preventionist, RN to outside agencies such as The California Department of Public Health, CDC, and the Institute for Medical Quality. Responsible for conducting infection prevention and control activities to promote organization-wide compliance.
- Interprets regulations pertaining to Infection Control and assists other departments in developing changes to meet internal and external requirements.
- Influences change through active participation on relevant committees and provides reports as requested.
CONSULTATION
- Participates in the development and implementation of patient care and employee/patient safety policies.
- Serves as an expert resource regarding nursing, infection prevention, and infection exposure response.
- Provides consultation, decision support and guidance on patient safety and infection control issues.
- Collaborates with all CMC departments to develop and implement policies to minimize risks and enhance compliance.
- Responds to serious incidents involving patient infection control and initiates investigations as necessary.
MONITORING AND SURVEILLANCE
- Performs ongoing surveillance of infection in patients and conducts chart reviews as needed.
- Inspects the environment for compliance with infection control standards.
- Participates in the evaluation and implementation of medical equipment for optimal safety.

- Remains accessible by phone for emergencies and urgent Infection Control matters.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Associate or bachelor's degree in healthcare preferred with a minimum of two years’ experience in Infection Control and/or Quality Improvement.
- Licensed as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse in California.
- Advanced knowledge of word processing and forms development software; proficiency in Microsoft Excel required.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Become a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) within 90 days of hire.
- Certification in Infection Prevention (CIC) or within 18 months of hire.
- Valid California Driver's License and personal transportation.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Certification in Infection Prevention (CIC).
- Master’s Science in Nursing Degree or closely related field.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
May require sitting for long periods of time, occasional bending, stretching, or lifting. Requires frequent walking and standing for prolonged periods.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Clinic and office environment with occasional work performed at other agencies.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees in this position are expected to travel, be on call/standby, and remain accessible for emergencies at all times.
