Position Information
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence-based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey.
The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse position is to serve as an expert in the delivery of advanced nursing care. The APN functions collaboratively with physician of protocol for prescriptive practice. Works collaboratively within the treatment team to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and assessment services to clients. Demonstrates competency according to the American Nursing Association Advanced Practice Standards for Psychiatric Nursing.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrates a commitment to maintain the standard of clinical practice adapted by the American Nurses Association and ensures that nursing care meets the national standards for the Advanced Practice Nurse.
- Engages in collaborative practice with the physician of protocol for prescriptive practice.
- Delivers high quality care as rated by supervisor, collaborating physician.
- Consults with physicians and other clinical staff members as necessary.
- Diagnoses health and developmental problems.
- Collaborates with consumer and treatment team members to develop person-centered treatment plans based on the consumer's expressed life goals.
- Provides advanced practice nursing care to consumers presenting with acute mental health problems, managing therapeutic regimes according to protocols.
- Identifies risk factors and implements appropriate prevention and intervention.
- Provides and documents medication management, counseling, and education services.
- Assists in the development of protocols for specific psychiatric consumer population.
- Coordinates referrals and facilitates transfers.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master's Degree in Nursing required.
- At least two (2) years of nursing experience required preferably as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
Certifications/Licenses
- Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
- Certified or eligible as Clinical Nurse Specialist in psychiatric-mental health nursing.
- American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in psychiatric mental health nursing and current NJ Board of Nursing Certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
