The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) is a five-member commission appointed by the Governor. The FGCC is charged with investigating and enforcing Florida pari-mutuel and gaming statutes and rules.
The FGCC’s Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering, Office of Operations, is searching for OPS Veterinarian. THIS POSITION WORKS IN A BARN WITH HORSES. This position is governed by Chapter 550 F.S., and Section 75 F.A.C., relating to the detention and handling of racehorses at licensed racetrack facilities within the State of Florida.
NOTE: This is a part-time position, the incumbent will work approximately 30 hours per week during the racing season at the State Detention Barn at Tampa Bay Downs racetrack, at the rate of $45 per hour.
Position Overview and Responsibilities:
- The incumbent of this position will spend 75 percent of time collecting specimen samples (blood) from racing animals following strict chain-of-custody procedures to ensure evidential integrity of test results and be prepared to serve as an expert witness during administrative hearings regarding impermissible medications.
- The state veterinarian will observe the overall health of the horses and be prepared to recommend to the Stewards the scratching (disqualifying) of any horse considered to be unsound or unfit to race or that a “special” urine and/or blood sample be collected from any horse suspected of not performing according to form.
- The state veterinarian reports directly to the Regional Supervisor but is required to work closely with the detention barn supervisor and staff.
- Incumbent should be comfortable working in a barn/stable environment including the ability to walk on various surfaces, such as dirt and shavings/straw for several hours; must be able to perform work in inclement weather conditions; must be available to work afternoons and evenings, including weekends and holidays, as needed.

- Incumbent must comprehensively understand, and consistently apply the provisions of Chapter 550, Florida Statutes, and Section 75, Florida Administrative Code each scheduled workday.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos and to occasionally write simple correspondence.
- Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and balance team and individual responsibilities. Must be able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
- Incumbent must consistently comply with all employer safety, security, and chain-of-custody protocols; and
- Incumbent is expected to be conscientious, dependable, punctual, and available to work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings; work flexible schedules as needed; work occasional evenings and/or nights; work overtime on short notice as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- One (1) year of relevant experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A current State of Florida license in veterinary medicine.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with thoroughbred racehorses, other breeds of horses, or other large animals.
- Verifiable experience and/or training; or a combination of extensive education and experience in the Florida regulated thoroughbred industry or a similar jurisdiction.
