Scope of work
Because this unit cares for complex trauma patients after surgery and helps with overflow of Heart and Lung (CTICU) and supports the Neuro ICU team they share a floor with, the work is both challenging and fulfilling. We generally have 2 Nurse Techs working on this team at night.
The surgical ICU specializes in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients. Our Nursing Technicians support nurses and other ancillary staff in providing competent care of patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining titratable medications including cardiac and sedation medications, and assist with bedside procedures including preparation of the sterile field for tracheostomies, central line placement, and burn dressing changes. The surgical ICU is a fast-paced unit that relies on teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach with not only provider teams but ancillary staff in order to deliver excellent and effective care.
Responsibilities also include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
Orientation
Orientation for the first and third week of employment as Nurse Tech in Surgical ICU would begin December 1st and requires multiple weekday training classes that are 8am-4:30pm. SICU Nurse Tech Orientation is about 11 weeks in length. Class work and preceptor work 2-3 shifts per week. We cannot guarantee specific recurring weekdays off; however, if you need a specific day off each week you could ask teammates if they are available to trade a day.
