The County of San Diego is now hiring for
Mental Health Aide
Interviews will be held on Thursdays. Job offers will take place shortly after the interviews.
Mental Health Aides at the Psychiatric Hospital are assigned to one of two shifts:
Morning (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) or Night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.)
In addition to base salary, Mental Health Aides at the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital earn a 5% location premium.
Mental Health Aides perform routine, non-technical, para-professional work in caring for patients admitted to the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital. Responsibilities include:
- Observing and monitoring the behavior and whereabouts of patients to maintain their safety.
- Interacting with and providing directions to patients when they require assistance with daily living activities or demonstrate high-risk behaviors.
- Ensuring patients receive appropriate diet by reviewing dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences.
- Obtaining information from nursing, physicians, and other support services about patient conditions and treatment plans.
- Conducting and recording vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration rate as requested.
- Noting observations of patient behavior including complaints or physical symptoms to nurses.
- Providing environmental rounding to ensure a safe and clean environment.
- Accompanying and assisting patients during outings for court, tests, treatments, or appointments.
- Participating in observing, facilitating, and documenting group activities.
- Intervening and calming patients during crises.
Required Education and Experience- One (1) year of experience working with patients who are mentally ill; OR
- Completion of 15 college units from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in nursing, counseling, psychology, sociology, or a closely related behavioral science field; AND six (6) months of experience working with patients who are mentally ill.
Condition of EmploymentAs part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment.
Evaluation ProcessQualified candidates will be placed on a three (3) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications. Ensure all information is complete and accurate.
