MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree which includes a total of twenty-four semester hours in any one or a combination of the following: public health, epidemiology, social sciences, biological sciences, behavioral sciences, or nursing plus one year of professional level experience in epidemiology.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in one of the fields listed above will substitute for all of the required experience.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

To monitor, analyze, and interpret epidemiological data in order to help assure the health and safety of Louisiana citizens.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from a Public Health Epidemiologist Technician 1 by independent performance of duties.
Differs from Public Health Epidemiologist by the absence of independence in conducting epidemiological activities and the absence of independence in using technical tools of epidemiology, such as study design and statistics.
The Infectious Disease Epidemiology (IDEpi) Section is responsible for reducing the occurrence of infectious diseases of public health importance. The Section conducts surveillance activities to detect cases and identify trends and to institute appropriate intervention and follow-up control measures.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct surveillance and epidemiological investigations to identify, monitor, and control viral respiratory diseases (VRD) in the community.
- Manage VRD virologic surveillance program to determine what viruses are circulating and confirm adequate sample testing at the state public health lab.
- Conduct VRD mortality surveillance for reportable deaths (influenza, COVID-19, and RSV).
- Lead VRD outbreak response.
- Conduct data analysis as required for public and internal reporting.
- Manage text-illness monitoring system as needed for outbreak response or novel influenza infections.
- Support the VRD component of CDC’s Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity grant.
- Update IDEpi surveillance annex of the Louisiana Pandemic Influenza Plan, at minimum, on a yearly basis.
